Mariano Navone knocked Matteo Berrettini out of the National Bank Open in the first round, winning 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 on Monday in Montreal. The Argentine battled through two hours and 36 minutes on hard court to reach the second round.
Berrettini brought the bigger serve and the heavier forehand, but Navone refused to break. He saved 11 of the 12 break points he faced and turned the Italian’s main weapon into a source of frustration at Rogers Court.

A breakthrough on a faster surface
The result carries weight because Navone had lost to Berrettini in straight sets on clay back in April. Reversing that on a quicker court points to a game that no longer lives only on the dirt.
The win was Navone’s 19th of 2026, a career high for victories in a single season with months still to play. Ranked 44th to Berrettini’s 40th, he closed as the outsider and ignored the read.
