Canadian tennis player Kayla Cross competes at the National Bank Open in Toronto

Tennis: Kayla Cross stuns Boulter for maiden WTA win

A breakthrough on home soil

Kayla Cross had never won a match on the WTA Tour. That changed Monday in Toronto, where the 21-year-old Canadian wildcard beat Britain’s Katie Boulter 7-6 (3), 7-5 in the first round of the National Bank Open, the WTA 1000 event on home soil.

It was Cross’s first singles win at any level on the main tour, and it arrived at the biggest stop available to her. She reached the main draw by winning the Road to the NBO playoff in Granby, the most significant title of her young career, then carried that form into a packed home crowd.

The scoreline reflected a player who held her nerve. Cross took the opening set in a tie-break, then closed out the second 7-5 without letting the more experienced Boulter drag the match to a decider.

Andreescu’s exit changes the Canadian story

The win landed on the same day Canadian tennis lost its most familiar name from the draw. Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion who won this very tournament as a wildcard in Toronto that same year, fell 7-5, 6-4 to Czechia’s Nikola Bartunkova in the first round.

For a crowd that came to see Andreescu, Cross offered a fresh reason to stay. Seven years after Andreescu’s teenage run through this event, another young Canadian is generating the noise.

What comes next

Cross moves into the second round with nothing to defend and plenty to gain, a position that suits a player ranked outside the game’s upper tier. Her ranking will climb regardless of what follows, and the WTA 1000 points on offer reward every round survived.
