Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders: a derby with the tension cranked right up 
Five goals between the sides earlier this month, their paths drifting further apart ever since, and now Providence Park is ready to boil. Seattle are back in Portland already, just three weeks after being thumped 5-1 at home by their rivals.
The Timbers have found some rhythm since the coaching change. The Sounders, by contrast, have stopped winning altogether and are now on a five-game losing streak. In a derby, runs only tell you so much, but this one is starting to hang heavy over Seattle.
Portland have got moving again 
Phil Neville’s exit did not fix everything overnight, but it clearly freed something up. Portland have not lost since and have picked up seven points from their last three league games. The latest win, a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake, pulled the Timbers to within three points of Seattle.
Marti Cifuentes has inherited a group that does not fold easily. Behind in their last three games at Providence Park, Portland have fought back twice. That edge has sometimes masked defensive mistakes, but it has kept them rolling when they badly needed it.
Felipe Mora has left the club after scoring twice, which leaves Kevin Kelsy as the main attacking option despite his uncertainty. With or without him, Portland still have runners who can stretch a back line, led by Antony, Kristoffer Velde and Alexander Aravena.
Seattle are carrying the weight of a dreadful run 
The loss in Philadelphia was not a collapse. Seattle only went down 1-0, but it extended a run that is getting harder to ignore. Five straight MLS defeats: the club has never had a worse stretch in its history.
The attacking numbers are just as grim as the results. Only two goals have been scored across that run, and life on the road has done nothing to help. Since the start of the season, the Sounders have still not scored more than once in a league game away from home.
Brian Schmetzer also has a packed treatment room to deal with. Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan, Pedro de la Vega and Alex Roldan could all miss the derby. At a time when Seattle are already short on confidence, that kind of absences list leaves very little room to adjust.

Portland Timbers win
Portland have already done serious damage to Seattle this season. That 5-1 hammering in July does not guarantee anything in this derby, but it does show the Timbers know where to hurt their neighbours. Since that night, their confidence has only grown.
Seattle arrive in Oregon on the back of five defeats, a blunt attack and several key players either out or below full fitness. A derby can always spark a reaction, but right now the Sounders are offering very little to trust away from home.
Providence Park also gives Portland a real base to build from. They have lost just once in their last six MLS games there and tend to hold the upper hand in this rivalry. On current form, the Timbers start a step ahead.
