Soccer: NYCFC sign Palmeiras striker Luighi on loan

New York City FC wanted more punch up top, and they got it. The club signed Brazilian striker Luighi Hanri Sousa Santos on loan yesterday, a deal that runs to the end of the 2026 season. There is an option to buy attached, so if he clicks, NYCFC can keep him.

Twenty years old, still unproven

Luighi is 20. The numbers so far are modest: five goals and one assist across 45 games for Palmeiras over three seasons. He did find the net this year to push the club into the Copa do Brasil last 16, a flash of what the raw tools might become.

“Luighi adds an attacking threat to our front line, which will be crucial in the second half of the season,” sporting director Todd Dunivant said.

Thrown into a playoff chase

The kid isn’t hiding from it. “I will give everything every day to help the team,” he said. NYCFC need those goals fast, with the playoff race already tightening.
