Colorado cracks in the ninth
San Diego had the last say. Xander Bogaerts lofted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to bring home the winning run, and the Padres slipped past the Rockies 8-7 on Wednesday night. Jackson Merrill lit the fuse with a single, stole second, then took third when Hunter Goodman’s throw sailed away, Colorado’s fourth error of the night. Two walks loaded the bases. Bogaerts just had to find enough outfield grass. That is the third walk-off San Diego has hung on Colorado this season, which tells you plenty about the gap between these two.

Tatis carries the load
Fernando Tatis Jr. racked up five of the Padres’ 16 hits. He scored, drove in a run, and kept hauling San Diego back whenever Colorado threatened to break clear. Mason Miller (3-1) struck out the side in the ninth for the win. The lead kept flipping. Willi Castro and Mickey Moniak staked Colorado to an early edge, and San Diego answered inning by inning, until Manny Machado’s single in the eighth pulled Jake Cronenworth home to level it.
Back over .500, barely
A fourth straight win nudged the Padres above .500 for the first time since July 1. Slim margin, but the calendar is finally breaking their way for a team still hunting a rhythm.
