A camp opener the Steelers did not want
Pittsburgh will start training camp without one of its most recognizable defenders. The Steelers placed cornerback Jalen Ramsey on the physically unable to perform list Tuesday after the eight-time Pro Bowler hurt his knee during minicamp.
General manager Omar Khan moved fast to cool any panic. The injury needs no surgery and, by his estimate, no long stay on the sideline. “Just probably be a couple weeks if I had to guess on his return,” Khan said. “We’re just going to be smart about it.”
Ramsey arrived in Pittsburgh last summer in the swap that sent safety Minkah Fitzpatrick back to Miami. He answered with 88 tackles, three sacks and an interception across 17 games, the kind of return that explains why the Steelers want him healthy rather than rushed.

A resume that argues for patience
Context helps here. Ramsey, 31, has logged 622 tackles and 25 interceptions in 152 games since Jacksonville took him fifth overall in 2016. A decade of that workload buys a player the benefit of the doubt on a two-week timeline.
The Steelers picked up better news elsewhere along the line of scrimmage. Tackle Broderick Jones, whose 2025 ended with a neck injury, was cleared to practice Wednesday. Jones has started 38 of his 45 games since Pittsburgh drafted him 14th overall in 2023.
One more name on the list
Cornerback Donte Kent joined Ramsey on the PUP list with a foot problem. The 2025 seventh-round pick landed on injured reserve last August, roughly three and a half months after signing, so the depth behind Ramsey carries its own questions.
