A rebuild that could not wait
Arsenal Women did not have a bad 2025-26 season. A UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final and a second-place finish in the Women’s Super League is a return most clubs would take. The squad behind it, though, was ageing and heading for free agency in numbers, and the board read the warning signs.
The exits came quickly. Beth Mead left for Manchester City, Katie McCabe joined Chelsea, and squad players such as Laia Codina and Victoria Pelova also moved on. By the middle of July, Arsenal had answered with five new arrivals, four of them on free transfers, in one of the busiest windows the club has run.

Stanway sets the tone
The marquee signing is Georgia Stanway, back in the WSL on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. The numbers explain the excitement. Since 2022-23 she has completed 2,919 successful passes in the opposition half, 754 more than any other player in the Frauen-Bundesliga across that span. She scored 24 league goals and added 19 assists in Germany, and she sits joint-sixth on England’s all-time scoring list with 33 goals in 93 caps.
Selina Cerci arrives from Hoffenheim with an even sharper edge in front of goal. Her 32 Frauen-Bundesliga goals since 2024 are more than any other player in the division, and the fourth-highest total across Europe’s top five leagues in that window, behind only Ewa Pajor and Khadija Shaw. A conversion rate of 25.4% dwarfs what Arsenal’s incumbent strikers managed last season.
Versatility runs through the rest
Geraldine Reuteler, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt, has filled almost every outfield role since 2018 and ranks third in the Frauen-Bundesliga for successful passes into the final third over that period. Ona Batlle returns to England from Barcelona having won 43 Women’s Champions League tackles in three seasons, level with Lucy Bronze for the most by any defender. Only Lisa Baum, a 19-year-old bought from RB Leipzig for a reported 510,000 pounds, cost a fee, and she was the youngest player to reach six goals in a Frauen-Bundesliga season.
Renee Slegers now has depth, technical quality and cover across the pitch. Whether it carries Arsenal past Chelsea and Manchester City is the question the new season will answer.
