San Jose Earthquakes vs Los Angeles Galaxy : a California derby with very different stakes 
San Jose are back at PayPal Park looking for revenge. That heavy loss to Orlando City still stings, but the Earthquakes remain near the top of the Western Conference and can even go clear at the summit with a win.
The picture is different for LA Galaxy. The visitors are still within touching distance of the play-off places despite an uneven season, and they know a result in this derby would keep them right in the race.
San Jose need to rediscover their cutting edge 
The 4-0 defeat to Orlando caught everyone off guard. Until then, San Jose had looked in control, but that night was a reminder that they can still unravel when put under early pressure.
Even so, the foundations are there. The Earthquakes have won ten of their 16 league matches and still look like one of the conference’s more serious outfits. Their high press and quick breaks continue to cause major problems for opposing defences.
Preston Judd remains the main threat up front. With 11 goals already this season, he has underlined his value to the system, while Beau Leroux and Hernan Lopez keep feeding attacks from midfield.

Galaxy have struggled to put any sort of run together in recent weeks. The results have been flat, and three matches without a win have slowed their climb up the table. At the back, they are giving up too much space and conceding far too easily since the season restarted.
With Joao Klauss out, Marco Reus has to carry even more of the load. The German remains the one player most likely to unlock a game with his quality, but he is sometimes left with too little support in the final third.
The visitors can at least lean on a strong record in this derby. They have not lost away to San Jose for several years and usually arrive for this fixture full of confidence, even when their form is patchy.

Matches between these two clubs often open up. Both sides want to play on the front foot, and neither has offered much defensive reassurance of late. San Jose shipped four against Orlando, while Galaxy have already conceded three in each of their last two outings.
The Earthquakes will be desperate to respond in front of their own fans after their heaviest defeat of the season. That sense of urgency should bring the game to life quickly, especially against a Los Angeles side that is happy to go straight back at teams in transition.
With Preston Judd on one side and Marco Reus on the other leading the charge, all the ingredients are there for a lively derby. A match featuring at least four goals looks a very live shout based on current form.
