New York Red Bulls vs Charlotte FC : a big night in the playoff race 
New York and Charlotte go into this round level on points, a sign of just how tight the Eastern Conference race remains. A win would pull either side closer to the top spots, while defeat could leave them playing catch-up as the second half of the season begins to bite.

The defeat in Philadelphia brought an encouraging run to a halt, but it does not wipe out the progress made before the international break. Michael Bradley’s side had started to look a lot more assured, picking up positive results and showing far more punch in attack than they managed in the early weeks of the campaign.
The problem is still at the back. The New York Red Bulls are conceding far too many goals and are regularly gifting opponents chances through avoidable mistakes. Until that soft underbelly is fixed, every game will stay on a knife edge, even when they are on top.
The good news for New York is that Julian Hall is in excellent form. The young forward keeps finding the net and has the support of Emil Forsberg, who remains a major creative force. At home, that partnership is a constant threat to visiting defenders.
Charlotte also have serious firepower 
Charlotte have not travelled especially well this season, but they still have enough quality in the final third to trouble anyone. The draw with Atlanta left a sour taste, but it also underlined Dean Smith’s side’s ability to create plenty of dangerous moments.
Injuries to Kerwin Vargas and Liel Abada will likely force a rethink in attack. Even so, Pep Biel remains the main man. His touch between the lines and his ability to bring others into play help keep Charlotte dangerous, even when they are not seeing much of the ball.
The memory of that emphatic 6-1 win over the New York Red Bulls earlier in the season will also give the visitors belief. The setting is different now, but Charlotte know they can find gaps in this New York back line.

All the ingredients are there for an entertaining game. New York score regularly in front of their own fans thanks to Julian Hall and Emil Forsberg, but their defence still struggles to keep a clean sheet. That lack of security often drags the Red Bulls into open games.
