Fenerbahce vs Gornik Zabrze : the Turks want to seize the initiative in the first leg
The road to the Champions League group phase starts here, in this second qualifying round. In Istanbul, Fenerbahce return to the European stage determined to flex their muscles against Gornik Zabrze. The hosts know these ties are often won in the first leg, especially in front of their own fans.
The Polish club are back in European competition after several seasons away. Just being here is a reward for a side that has climbed back towards the top of the domestic table. But this is a huge ask against one of Turkey’s most ambitious squads.
Try it for $0.99.
Fenerbahce aim to kick off their European summer in style
Last season still stings. Beaten by Galatasaray in the title race and then knocked out before the main Champions League phase, Fenerbahce are eager to move on fast. The return of Ismail Kartal in the dugout has come with a squad that has been strengthened again, with the clear aim of getting back to Europe’s top table at last.
Pre-season friendlies suggest a side already in decent shape. Three wins, 11 goals scored and a lively attack have given supporters plenty to feel good about heading into the new campaign. Even if a few major signings are not yet in the group, the firepower is still serious.
Marco Asensio should be one of the main attractions here alongside Talisca, Kerem Akturkoglu and Irfan Can Kahveci. At the back, Milan Skriniar brings plenty of know-how to a defence that will be focused on protecting a lead before the trip to Poland.
Gornik step into a different world
Gornik Zabrze are enjoying one of the most important periods in their recent history. After lifting their first major trophy in nearly 40 years and finishing runners-up in Poland, the club are back in Europe and loving it. But this tie is a giant leap into a different class of opposition.
Their summer has been a mixed bag. Results have swung between encouraging displays and sticky moments, before a Super Cup defeat to Lech Poznan. Squad turnover has not helped either, particularly after the exit of Lukas Ambros and the injury to Jaroslaw Kubicki.
Goalkeeper Tomasz Loska is suspended for the first leg, so Philipp Schulze will step in. Up front, Emil Prekop is expected to lead the line, while Kacper Urbanski has the job of driving the midfield in a game where the visitors will spend plenty of time under pressure from Fenerbahce.
Probable line-ups :
Fenerbahce : Gunok; Muldur, Skriniar, Oosterwolde, Mercan; Guendouzi, Fred; Kahveci, Asensio, Akturkoglu; Talisca
Gornik Zabrze : Schulze; Janicki, Sacek, Josema, Janza; Donio, Sadilek, Urbanski; Ismaheel, Prekop, Khlan
Champions League prediction : Fenerbahce vs Gornik Zabrze
Fenerbahce to win by two goals or more
Fenerbahce simply have more going for them in this first leg. Their squad is stronger on paper, they have far more European know-how, and they will be backed by a crowd that usually expects the home side to grab the game by the throat early.
Gornik are stepping into a level of demand very different from what they face in Ekstraklasa. With their first-choice keeper missing, several summer changes and a squad still looking for rhythm, the Poles could be in for a rough night against the intensity Fenerbahce tend to bring in Istanbul.
With players like Asensio, Talisca and Akturkoglu capable of turning a match on its head in a flash, Fenerbahce look well placed to build a proper lead before the return leg. A win by at least two goals feels the most likely outcome.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no bet without risk. Even when something looks “obvious”, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, sooner or later, you will.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Above all, don’t touch money you need to live. And whatever you do, don’t chase losses – it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it is taking up too much space in your life, if it is irritating you or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That’s what they’re there for.
- In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is forbidden for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast – money problems, family tension, addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They carry no legal weight. In plain English: you cannot rely on them to claim anything if a bet loses.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what is known at the time it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
