Croatia vs Ghana : a knockout game before the knockout stage
The tension could hardly be higher in Group L. Behind England, Croatia and Ghana meet with qualification on the line on the final matchday. The Black Stars have the slight mathematical edge: a draw would be enough to send them through to the round of 16. Croatia have no such luxury. They need a win to keep their North American adventure alive.
On paper, this has all the makings of a tight, cagey contest between two sides that know exactly what is at stake.
Croatia have to back up their response
After the heavy defeat to England (4-2), Zlatko Dalić’s side answered in the right way by beating Panama (1-0). The scoreline was modest, but the win put the Vatreni back in control of their own fate. Luka Modrić continues to run the show with his experience, while Martin Baturina underlined his importance between the lines with his touch and ability to beat a man. Up front, Ante Budimir made a strong case after his decisive cameo in the previous match and could start this time.
Croatia do know they need more cutting edge in attack. Against Panama, chances were limited and the smallest slip could have proved costly. This time, they will need to set the tempo from the first whistle.
Ghana lean on their defensive steel
Ghana arrive in a far calmer mood. After beating Panama and then battling to a superb draw with England, Carlos Queiroz’s team are sitting second in the group. The Black Stars have stood out for their defensive structure. They are still yet to concede a goal at this World Cup and held firm against England’s pressure on the final matchday.
That resilience will again be their main weapon. Ghana do not need to force the issue and could happily let Croatia have the ball, then look to exploit the space on the break. Caleb Yirenkyi remains one of their most dangerous outlets when the game opens up in transition.
Probable line-ups
Croatia : Livakovic; Stanisic, Pongracic, Sutalo, Gvardiol; Kovacic, Modric; Baturina, Pasalic, Perisic; Budimir
Ghana : Asare; Senaya, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah; Yirenkyi, Partey, Sibo; Williams, Ayew, Semenyo

World Cup 2026 prediction : Croatia vs Ghana
Croatia to win
All the pressure is on Croatia, but this is a team with more big-match know-how. After getting their confidence back against Panama, the 2018 runners-up now face a straight shootout they know they have to win. Ghana have built their run on a fiercely disciplined defence, but they will need to survive 90 minutes against a side that is likely to keep coming. The Black Stars can still qualify with a draw, which could naturally push them into a deep block.
In that context, Croatia’s technical quality in midfield, Luka Modric’s experience and the growing influence of players such as Baturina and Budimir could tip the balance when it matters most. It should be close, but Croatia look to have the slight edge to take the three points and book their place in the round of 16.

Before anything else, a note on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We offer an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is still sport: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal out of nowhere… and the whole script changes.
- Let’s be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks nailed on, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, that’s inevitable.
- The sensible approach is to keep things in check. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live. And above all, do not chase losses, because that rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it is taking up too much space in your life, getting under your skin or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what they are there for.
- At the end of the day, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never go away, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is forbidden for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can quickly spiral out of control (money lost, family strain, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They carry no legal weight. In plain English: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet fails.
Information can change
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But then a team sheet changes, a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your responsibility
Before betting, check that gambling is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling first
