France: Mbappe breaks Girouds record against Senegal and becomes the all-time top scorer for Les Bleus
Kylian Mbappe wrote another chapter in French football history on Tuesday night in East Rutherford. By scoring twice against Senegal in Frances opening game at the 2026 World Cup, the Real Madrid forward took his tally to 57 and then 58 goals for his country, moving clear of Olivier Giroud, who had held the record since December 4 2022 after scoring against Poland in the round of 16 in Qatar. At 27 and with only 99 caps, Mbappe now stands alone at the top of the France scoring charts.
The timing could hardly have been better. Mbappe had not scored since March 26 against Brazil, going three games without a goal against Colombia, Ivory Coast and Northern Ireland. The World Cup stage brought him back to life. One opener, then a stunning finish, and that was enough to wipe out Girouds mark for good and put Mbappe out in front in the national team scoring race.

This goals record just adds to an already ridiculous haul. Mbappe has been Frances all-time leading assist provider since last summer with 34. He is also the all-time top scorer in World Cup finals across all nations with four goals, and the youngest player ever to appear in two World Cup finals. In a single season, he also holds the record for goals scored by a French player with 54 in 2022-2023, one more than the legendary Just Fontaine.
At 27, and with plenty of years still ahead at the top level, Mbappe looks set to make this record untouchable. The 2026 World Cup has only just begun, and Frances captain has already made it clear he has arrived in Mexico and the United States in peak form. The next opponents have been warned.
