World Cup 2026 : Herve Renard takes back the Tunisia job

The collapse against S weden (1-5) did not give Sabri Lamouchi much time to breathe. The day after Tunisia’s disastrous start to the 2026 World Cup, the federation decided to change course.

The Carthage Eagles have moved to bring back Herve Renard, who has been out of work since his spell with Saudi Arabia ended. The 57-year-old Frenchman is expected to head to Monterrey quickly to prepare for the team’s second group game.

Sabri Lamouchi ran the session before learning his fate

The story told by several Tunisian media outlets is a strange one. Even as his replacement was being talked up everywhere, Sabri Lamouchi had still not received any official word from his federation. According to Ahmed Adala, a journalist at Radio Mosaique FM, the former Rennes boss turned up at the training centre as normal. He even arrived before his players and planned to stick to the day’s schedule.

In reality, nobody had told him anything yet. Until that official announcement, Lamouchi was still Tunisia boss. So he carried on working before his departure was finally confirmed a few hours later. That says plenty about his professionalism.

Brought in to support the staff during the tournament, Wahbi Khazri is expected to stay on until the end of the competition. His experience and dressing-room know-how should help provide some continuity in a tricky moment after a coaching change in the middle of a World Cup.

Herve Renard is back at the World Cup

Free for several months, Herve Renard is set for a rapid return to the international stage. The 57-year-old Frenchman is expected to arrive in Monterrey on Tuesday before taking his first training session that evening. He will be joined by several familiar staff members, including Nicolas Baudoin for video analysis, David Barriac on fitness work and Gilles Le Floch with the goalkeepers. That shake-up also means the exit of Olivier Pedemas, who was part of the staff built around Sabri Lamouchi.

Herve Renard will have only a few days to get his feet under the desk. With zero points after the opening round, Tunisia already have little room for error in the group. The new coach will make his debut in charge of the Carthage Eagles on June 21 against Japan, also in Monterrey. It is already a huge game if they want to keep any hope of reaching the last 16 alive.
