World Cup 2026: Lamouchi on the brink after Tunisia’s heavy defeat to Sweden
Tunisia have not got over the 5-1 battering by Sweden. After that disastrous opening game in Group F, tensions are running high inside the Carthage Eagles camp and Sabri Lamouchi is in serious trouble. According to several Tunisian media outlets, including Jawhara FM, the federation has held talks and the fate of the 54-year-old French coach is expected to be sealed soon. Lamouchi could end up with the grim distinction of being sacked after just one match at this World Cup 2026.
Yet in his press conference after the match, Lamouchi was already looking ahead to the next game against Japan. “Individual quality made the difference. We made individual mistakes that the Swedes were able to exploit. At a World Cup, there is no forgiveness. We will need to cut out the errors and make up for our tactical weaknesses. Sweden were better.” It sounded like the sort of analysis a manager gives while trying to talk himself out of a crisis. It might also have been his last public word in charge of the Carthage Eagles.

Kebaier tipped to take over, Khazri to step in for now
His replacement already appears to be lined up. Technical director Mondher Kebaier is being tipped to take control of the Tunisia team. Before that, Mozaique FM says Wahbi Khazri could act as caretaker while the switch is formally put in place. It’s a messy picture for a federation that only appointed Lamouchi last January on a deal running to 2028.
For Tunisia, it looks bleak. A heavy defeat, a manager on the way out and two brutal games ahead against Japan and the Netherlands. Changing coaches in the middle of a tournament is always a gamble, but the Tunisian federation appears to have decided keeping Lamouchi would be an even bigger risk. It’s a ruthless call, and one that shows just how badly the Sweden defeat has hit.
