Spurs vs Knicks – Match 1 preview for the NBA Finals

Spurs – Knicks: a huge Game 1NBA logo et symbole, sens, histoire, PNG, marque

Forty-eight years of waiting on one side. Thirteen years of rebuilding on the other. A megacity against a Texan town. Madison Square Garden versus Gregg Popovich’s legacy. Jalen Brunson versus Victor Wembanyama.

The NBA could hardly have asked for a better stage to mark its 80th Finals.

On Wednesday night into Thursday, the San Antonio Spurs will host Game 1 of a series that already has the feel of something big. The Knicks are back in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. The Spurs are there for the first time since their last title in 2014.

For most of the players on the floor, this will be all new. The lights will be brighter, the noise louder, the pressure heavier. And at the end of it all, one thing is certain: a new chapter in NBA history is about to be written.

Just two years ago, the Spurs were languishing near the bottom of the standings. Today, they are four wins from an NBA title. The rise has been electric.

Victor Wembanyama is, of course, the main reason. Since the start of the playoffs, the Frenchman has often looked like he belongs in a different weight class altogether. Too tall to be handled near the rim. Too quick to be tracked on the perimeter. Too sharp to be boxed in by a standard defensive plan.

Against the reigning champion Thunder, he got a full taste of spring basketball’s brutality: constant double teams, endless contact, tactical tweaks after every game. And still the Spurs survived. Better than that, they came out stronger. That series against Oklahoma City gave this young group the belief that they can do it.

The Texans head into the NBA Finals after the toughest path in the Western Conference. Portland, Minnesota, still in the conference final not long ago, then Oklahoma City, the reigning champ. Three very different hurdles, three very convincing answers from a group led by young coach Mitch Johnson.

New York finally steps back into the spotlight Fichier:Logo Knicks New York - 2011.svg — Wikipédia

For years, the Knicks have lived off nostalgia. The Garden in the 70s. Patrick Ewing. Those lost Finals against the Spurs in 1999. And above all, the memory of a franchise that seemed unable to find its place among the league’s heavyweights again.

Julius Randle and the front office started the rebuild, then Jalen Brunson arrived and the Big Apple got hope back. Quietly at first. Then with increasing authority. Until he became the face of New York’s revival.

These playoffs feel like the end point of that transformation. Atlanta were dispatched. Philadelphia were swept aside. Cleveland offered little resistance either. Eleven straight wins later, the Knicks arrive in San Antonio for the NBA Finals with huge confidence and the sense that nothing is off limits. The most striking thing may be the way they have done it. New York have not just won. They have strangled opponents. The ball moves beautifully in a system now built more around Karl-Anthony Towns. The shots keep dropping at a ridiculous rate. At the back, everyone knows the job. This is the kind of team that gives off the vibe of a future champion: calm, controlled and relentless, exactly what coach Mike Brown has managed to bring.

But none of the defences they have faced so far look like the one waiting now.

NBA prediction San Antonio Spurs vs New-York Knicks

San-Antonio Spurs to win by 6 points or more

This will not be straightforward, and that is exactly the kind of game the Spurs have shown they can handle. They also took control of Game 1 against the Thunder in the Western Conference final, proving their status and showing that a lack of experience does not rule anything out at this level.

The Knicks, on the other hand, come in full of belief after an 11-game winning run in the Eastern Conference playoffs, but the lack of rhythm that can come from a one-sided series, despite how impressive they looked against the Cavaliers, could give the Spurs the edge in this Game 1. Even so, the Knicks will try to grab home-court advantage back.

First, a word on our picks

  • What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We offer an opinion, a snapshot of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is sport: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks “certain”, it isn’t. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, at some point, you will.
  • The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live. And above all: do not chase losses, because that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking over your life, leaves you annoyed or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what they are there for.
  • In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
  • Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral quickly (money losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.

No commitment from us

Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet loses.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But things move on: a team sheet changes, a player gets hurt, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly become outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your role

Before betting, check that it is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling first

We cannot say it enough: gamble in moderation. If you struggle to stay in control, do not wait to seek help. We cannot be responsible for compulsive or excessive use of the information published on the site.

Legal age

mathodds content is for adults only. By browsing here, you confirm that you are old enough under the law to bet.
