Mason Miller writes his name into the record book in Mexico as Padres mark falls
The atmosphere was electric at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu on Saturday night. When the lights went out and the opening blast of Korn’s nu-metal kicked in, the Mexican crowd knew the fun was over. Mason Miller, the Padres’ towering closer, strode to the mound to slam the door on the Diamondbacks in a 6-4 win. By firing a spotless inning in the thin air, Miller has officially pushed Cla Meredith off the top of the franchise charts: with 34 and two-thirds scoreless innings, he now owns the outright San Diego record.
“One less thing to carry”
Clearly relieved, the pitcher played the milestone with real humility. “We can finally stop talking about it,” he joked after the game. Miller has now moved past legendary names such as Randy Jones and Cla Meredith. Meredith even sent in his congratulations with a video on social media, poking fun at himself: “Thanks, Mason. This is the most relevant I’ve been in 20 years, just because you’re about to break my streak!”

Top 10 all-time relief mark now in his sights
Miller is now the man in San Diego, but he’s also starting to rattle the rest of MLB. He currently sits eighth on the all-time list for relievers since 1961 for the longest scoreless streak. Gregg Olson’s record of 41 innings with Baltimore is now only 6 and two-thirds innings away. Here’s where he stands in the pecking order:
| Lanceur | Equipe | Consecutive innings (Scoreless) |
|---|---|---|
| Gregg Olson | Orioles | 41 IP |
| Brad Ziegler / Ryan Pressly | A’s / Astros | 39 IP |
| Josh Hader / Bob Moose | Brewers / Pirates | 38 IP |
| Craig Kimbrel | Braves | 37 2/3 IP |
| J.C. Romero | Twins | 36 IP |
| Mason Miller | Padres | 34 2/3 IP (en cours) |
Numbers from another planet
What makes this streak even more ridiculous is Miller’s raw domination. This season, he has struck out 27 of the 44 batters he has faced, a monstrous 61.3 percent rate. Of those 44 potential victims, only five have managed to reach base. Manny Machado, though, wasn’t remotely shocked by the surge: “We knew exactly who he was when we made the trade with Oakland last summer.”
The game was hardly a sure thing. Down 4-0 after two innings, the Padres showed some fight. A four-run burst in the seventh and a second Ty France homer of the night gave San Diego the perfect script for Miller to make history in front of a crowd that was loving every minute. Whether it’s the pure stuff or the rockstar entrance, Mason Miller became an international star in one night.
