NRL – Knights vs Panthers: Newcastle are out to upset the heavyweights 
Sunday’s meeting in Newcastle looks a lot trickier than it first appears. Penrith turn up as clear favourites, but the context makes this a far messier read. The Panthers have just been through a draining battle in Darwin that went all the way to golden point, while Newcastle are back home with a real point to prove after letting a game slip against the Roosters that was nearly theirs.
Newcastle were better than the final score suggests 
The 38-24 defeat to the Roosters looked harsher than the performance really was.
For more than an hour, Newcastle had the tools to land a big blow. The Knights were 24-12 up, moved the ball well, set the pace and, at times, looked like the more dangerous side.
Then it all fell apart in 25 minutes.
Five tries later, the whole story had changed.
But that collapse should not wipe out everything they did well before it. And that is where there may be value in this matchup.
At home, in a very different setting, Newcastle can make this a far more physical contest than expected.
Their pack has enough bite to make life awkward for Penrith, slow the tempo and turn this into a proper turf war.
And if the pace drops a little, that naturally helps the underdog.
This line feels like it was built more on the Penrith name than the actual match-up.
The Panthers come in off a real scrap 
The 23-22 win over the Dolphins looks like a response, but it came with a price.
Penrith started like they were about to run away with it, racing to 18-0, before slowly losing control. The Dolphins came back, the contest tightened, and Nathan Cleary had to drag the Panthers out of a trap that was closing around them.
That is what makes this spot interesting.
Games like that take plenty out of a side. Darwin is tiring enough on its own, and when a match turns into an 80-minute slugfest that runs into golden point, the hangover is rarely light the following week.
That is not a knock on Penrith. They are still the benchmark in the competition. But a small dip in intensity can be enough to stop a favourite covering a hefty handicap.
They also showed a few cracks you do not usually see. 14 errors, 44 missed tackles… the sort of numbers that tell you it was a lot less controlled than the scoreline suggests.
And against a home side likely to scrap for everything, that matters.

This is not about tipping Penrith to lose. It is about backing a match competitive enough for Newcastle to do some damage on the scoreboard.
Three converted tries gets this home, and on the evidence available, that looks very doable.
The Panthers can win. Probably will.
But with the Darwin tax, a hungry Newcastle side and a line that feels a shade too high, the Knights have every chance of doing their bit in attack.
