Detroit Red Wings vs Columbus Blue Jackets: loser beware in the playoff race!
We’re straight into a proper East playoff dogfight. Simple as that: these two clubs are level on points and scrapping like mad for a top-eight spot. Trouble is, both Detroit and Columbus are wobbling badly, which makes this one a coin toss.
This is the sort of game where tactics go out the window and panic takes over. Let’s cut through the noise and find the angle.
Detroit under pressure at home
Sitting 10th in the Eastern Conference, Detroit have 88 points and a goal difference of -9 (225-234). It’s a make-or-break stretch for the Motor City side, who are throwing everything they’ve got at a late push for the postseason.
Across their last five, Detroit have badly lost their edge, taking four defeats and only one win, a 4-2 scrape past Philadelphia. The inconsistency is glaring, especially after that 5-1 pasting by Pittsburgh, where they were already 3-0 down after just 20 minutes. Even worse, Detroit have now lost four straight in regulation at home. If they want spring hockey, they’ll need to stop leaking goals at the back.
Columbus falling apart
Right behind them in 11th, Columbus also have 88 points but a better differential at +3 (241-238). On paper, that looks a bit prettier than Detroit. On the ice, it’s a different story. The Blue Jackets are stuck in a nasty six-game losing streak.
Their recent collapse against the Jets (2-1) and the early disaster against Carolina, where they were 3-0 down after the first period, show a team that’s lost its defensive bearings. Only a spirited overtime defeat to Boston (4-3) offers even a faint sign of fight. Overall, this side looks disjointed and gives up far too much pressure, and that’s a problem that could cost them dearly.
NHL pick Detroit Red Wings vs Columbus Blue Jackets
Over 5.5 goals in the game
All the signs point to a noisy, open night. This rivalry has long been a goal fest: in the last seven meetings, the two teams have combined for at least seven goals every single time. Tonight, Detroit and Columbus arrive with the same defensive flaws and the same habit of switching off at the wrong moment.
Even if wins have been hard to come by at Little Caesars Arena, Detroit’s attack is still doing enough, with 11 goals in their last four games, an average of 2.7 per match. Columbus, for their part, can still punch back going forward when they’re chasing the game. With both teams level on points and fighting for survival, this should open up. Backing Over 5.5 goals looks the sensible play in Detroit vs Columbus.

Before anything else, a word on our picks
- What we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. We’re sharing an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal out of nowhere… and the script flips.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, it isn’t. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, you will.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And above all, don’t chase your losses. That usually ends badly.
- Betting should stay a game, not a job and not a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your life, if it winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if you need to, speak to a specialist service. That’s what they’re there for.
- At the end of the day, it’s on you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Gambling can spiral fast, leading to money problems, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our picks are not a contract. They have no legal force. Plain and simple: you can’t use them to claim anything if a bet loses.
Information changes
A pick is always based on what we know when it’s written. But then the line-up changes, a player gets hurt, the weather turns nasty… and the analysis can be out of date in a flash. We can’t be held responsible for that.
Your responsibility
Before you bet, check that wagering is legal where you live. If it isn’t, that’s on you, not us.
