The Good Friday showdown is back, and as usual, it’s got plenty riding on it. In Sydney, the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs meet in a game steeped in history… and pressure. South Sydney want to back up their form, Canterbury are desperate to snap out of it. It has all the ingredients for a cracking contest.
The Rabbitohs keep moving, but they’re not exactly dazzling 
The Rabbitohs’ start to the season has been anything but smooth. Still, they’ve kept ticking over. Their win over the Tigers before the break left a funny taste: not dominant, rattled at times… but still finding a way to get it done.
Less ball, bits of sloppy play, a defence that’s far from spotless… and yet the Rabbitohs dug out the result. That might be the most interesting part of all: the knack of winning without being anywhere near their best.
The break came at the right time. A chance to breathe, tidy up a few things… and come back with a bit more about them.
The Bulldogs are still hunting for answers 
For the Bulldogs, things look more worrying. The loss to the Knights left a mark, especially in the manner of it. Beyond the scoreline, it’s the overall balance of the side that’s under the microscope.
Going forward, the chances are there… they’re just wasted. At the back, the mistakes keep piling up, and at this level that gets punished. Too many missed tackles, too many poor decisions, too much loose play: it’s hard to build anything like that.
There is talent there, though. Players who can turn a match. But right now, the machine isn’t firing. And against a side like South Sydney, any slip-up can cost a fortune.
A fixture of its own
This one never feels like just another game. The atmosphere, the stakes, the tradition… it all drags both teams into the fire. And more often than not, it’s the small things, maybe even the nerves, that decide it.
The Rabbitohs come in with a slight edge, but nothing is ever locked in for this sort of clash. Especially not against a Bulldogs side that’ll be stinging.
