New York Islanders – Pittsburgh Penguins: a playoff-style showdown
This smells like playoff hockey. Neighbors in the East standings and serious postseason hopefuls, these two heavyweights will scrap hard. The points on offer matter big time.
No faff — we dig into the data and tactics to hunt the best price on the market.
The Islanders have locked the door
Before this next stretch the Isles are riding a two-game win streak. They knocked off the Dallas Stars (2-1) then the Florida Panthers (5-2). Built on a brick-wall defense, the home side even grabbed sixth in the East — just ahead of Pittsburgh.
At UBS Arena they’re solid: 4 wins in their last 5 home games. The Isles have turned the rink into a fortress with a 60% win rate this season. They aren’t the flashiest scoring team (3.03 goals, 11th in the conference) but the defense delivers — just 2.74 goals against on average. Injury list: defenseman Tony DeAngelo is out for the rest of the regular season. Alexander Romanov is back on the ice, but don’t bank on him before round two of the playoffs.
Pittsburgh — proud on the road
Under Dan Muse things are a bit jittery. One win in their last four (a 4-3 shootout over Ottawa) — the engine’s coughing. They also took a heavy home beating from Dallas (6-3), which shoved them down to seventh in a jam-packed East where every point counts.
Yet on the road the Penguins travel well. They’ve picked up points on their last four away trips — vital for confidence. Away record: 52.8% wins. Offense is dangerous (3.36 goals per game, 5th) while the defense stays tight (2.75 GA). Squad clarity is thin: Evgeni Malkin (physical issue) and returning Sidney Crosby are doubtful. Caleb Jones, Filip Hallander and Blake Lizotte are officially out.
NHL Prediction New York Islanders vs Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Penguins with a +1 handicap
There’s a real statistical quirk to exploit. This season the Islanders have strung together back-to-back regulation wins seven times. In six of those seven follow-ups they either slipped up or won by a single goal — classic post-win letdown.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, are dangerous when hurt. After conceding six goals or more (like that Dallas drubbing), they usually bounce back with pride: in five of six similar cases they avoided losing by more than one goal. Pair that road resilience with the Isles’ tendency not to blow teams out, and Pittsburgh +1 looks like gold. That play has been a winner or a push in 17 of their last 18 away trips.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on Mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We offer an opinion, a snapshot, never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal… and the script flips.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, nothing is certain. Yes, you can lose. It will happen at some point.
- Best advice: be sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And don’t chase losses — it rarely ends well.
- Betting should stay a hobby, not a job or a source of income. If it’s taking over your life, annoying you or putting you under pressure, take a break. If needed, talk to a specialist organisation. That’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means you accept the risk exists and it won’t disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must comply with your country’s law. Gambling can spiral (financial losses, family tensions, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions don’t form a contract. They carry no legal weight. In short: you can’t rely on them to claim anything if a bet loses.
Info can change
A tip is based on what we know when we write it. But between then and puck drop a lineup can change, a player can get injured, weather can turn… and the analysis can go out of date. We can’t be held responsible for that.
