New York Rangers – Chicago Blackhawks: Rangers hit rock bottom — a gift for Chicago?
The Rangers are set to play their first game since being officially knocked out of the playoff race. It was coming all season, but this dreadful run — six straight losses — has finally drowned any hope for the Blueshirts.
Can Chicago profit from their opponent’s collapse? We sift through the stats and the big trends from this regular-season clash to bring you the best pick.
New York in freefall
Mike Sullivan’s side go into this with their heads under water — six straight losses, their worst streak of the season. Over the last ten days they’ve been hammered by the Kings, Devils, Blue Jackets, Jets, Senators and Maple Leafs. It’s official: the Rangers are the first team in the Eastern Conference to be mathematically eliminated.
At home, Madison Square Garden doesn’t scare anyone any more: four straight home defeats. With just a 26.5% win rate and 36.8% of possible points picked up, they have the worst home record in the conference by a mile. The attack is starving (2.18 goals per game, last in the league) and the defense is leaking (3.24 goals against, 26th). A sliver of good news for the run-in: backup goalie Jonathan Quick, defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and forward Noah Laba are back. Matt Rempe, however, is done for the season.
Chicago Blackhawks cling to a thread
The Hawks have lost only two regulation games in their last 10 outings. Their most recent defeat was at the Flyers (5-1). Hope is alive: Chicago still has a slim path to the playoffs, but they’ll need the biggest winning streak of the season to erase a 10-point gap to the West’s top eight.
On the road Jeff Blashill’s men struggle, winning just 38.9% away from home. The offense stumbles on the road (2.56 goals on average, 31st in the NHL) and the defense isn’t much better (3.31 goals allowed, 23rd). On the personnel front, Matt Grzelcyk and Andrew Mangiapane are expected early next week, with Oliver Moore pencilled in for the run-in. Veterans Shea Weber and Ryan Ellis are out for good.
NHL Pick New York Rangers vs Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago Blackhawks to win or lose by no more than 1 goal
The head-to-head record between these two clubs at Madison Square Garden tells a story and hides a bettor’s nugget. Brace yourself: since 2010 Chicago have lost by more than one goal in New York just once. In 12 of their last 13 visits the Blackhawks either won or lost by a single goal.
Facing Rangers who have nothing left to play for, who keep coughing up games at home (the worst record in the conference) and who can’t score, Chicago have a genuine chance. The visitors cling to their faint playoff hopes and will fight for every inch. Backing Chicago with the +1.5 handicap looks like the smartest, safest play to handle this toss-up match!

First off, a word about our picks
- What we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. We share an opinion, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing truly is. And yes, that means you can lose. It will happen at some point.
- Best practice: be sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And don’t chase losses — it rarely ends well.
- Betting should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it’s taking over your life, irritating you or putting you under pressure, take a break. If needed, talk to a specialist organization. That’s what they’re for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and that it will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must comply with your country’s laws. Gambling can spiral (money losses, family tensions, addiction). Need help? Call: 09 74 75 13 13 (standard-rate) https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment on our part
Our picks are not a contract. They carry no legal weight. In plain terms: you can’t rely on them to make a claim if a bet doesn’t pay off.
Info can change
A pick is based on what we know when we write it. But between then and kickoff a lineup can change, a player can get injured, the weather can turn… and the analysis can become outdated fast. We can’t be held responsible for that.
