Recently, Patrick Roy’s group pulled off a proper upset, beating the Dallas Stars (2nd in the West) 2-1 and shoved themselves back into the East’s top-8 conversation. They’re sitting 10th right now, but New York still has a very real shot at a playoff spot—especially if they handle these kind of must-win games.
At home their form can wobble, but they still win the majority of games in front of the fans (58.8% wins). In New York this team lives by defence: they only score 2.97 goals per game (22nd), but they allow just 2.76 (the 6th-best defence in the league). On the roster, defenseman Tony DeAngelo is out. Good news: Alexander Romanov is back on the ice, and Anthony Duclair is likely to dress tonight.
Florida Panthers in freefall 
For the Florida Panthers it’s been a slow slide for the defending champions. Paul Maurice’s side have been alternating wins and losses: after a tidy overtime win over Seattle (5-4) they fell at home to Minnesota (3-2).
On the road it’s a disaster: the Panthers haven’t strung together two straight away wins in two months. Their attack has stalled and the defence is leaking. The root cause? A mass of injuries ruining the season. Right now 11 players are on the injured list, stripping the team of its main offensive weapons (though Sam Reinhart and Mackie Samoskevich still have a slim chance to play in New York).
