This is simply the biggest rivalry in NHL history, and it’s coming around for the fourth time this season. The Montreal–Boston clash gets even hotter when you look at the table: just one point separates the two teams in the Eastern Conference.
We break down the form going into this regular-season showdown and deliver our sharpest pick.
The Montreal Canadiens in a rut 
The men in red arrive for this derby a touch off the pace. They’ve lost two straight in regulation, caught by the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks. That’s a real setback for a franchise that had avoided slumps for a while. Sitting 5th in the East, Montreal is still only a win away from the top four.
The main worry right now is home defence. For the first time in three months, Montreal has conceded 4+ goals in back-to-back games at the Bell Centre. Home fixtures have been wild (3,36 goals scored on average versus 3,21 conceded). On the injury front good news: Patrick Laine should be back for this one, as should Kirby Dach. In the last game Jayden Struble and Zachary Bolduc were absent, replaced by Arber Xhekaj and Brendan Gallagher.
Bruins hanging in there despite the storm 
Boston nicked a valuable point despite an overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils (4-3). Marco Sturm’s side are moving slowly, but they’re moving — 5 points from the last 6 games. The attack has been a bit rusty since early March with just 2,33 goals per game, but they’re lurking only a point behind Montreal.
Their away form looks ugly: 8 defeats in their last 9 road trips. Caveat: most of those losses went past regulation, so they still collect points. Their road defence is the worst in the East (3,66 goals conceded on average). Thankfully the injury list is empty. The coach is rotating: Henri Jokiharju replaced Andrew Peeke in the last match, and Alex Steeves took Mikey Eyssimont’s spot.

Even if the bookies list Montreal as the home favourites, beware the Canadiens’ goalies — chronically inconsistent right now (conceding over 3 goals on average since the restart). In a derby this heated, goaltending will decide everything, and Boston has a clear edge with a well-rested Jeremy Swayman (Joonas Korpisalo played the last game).
But the stat that pushes us into this pick is Boston’s insane record at the Bell Centre. Brace yourself: Boston hasn’t lost in regulation in Montreal on 13 of their last 15 visits! The Bruins are a genuine bogey team for the Canadiens on their own ice. With the hosts leaking defensively lately, backing the “Double Chance X2” (Boston doesn’t lose in 60 minutes) is by far the safest play.
