Bayern Munich – Atalanta: Impossible task for Atalanta at the Allianz Arena 
Wednesday night at the Allianz Arena should be little more than a formality. Atalanta arrive in Bavaria clinging to the tiniest hope of pulling off the robbery of the century after being ripped apart last week (6-1). Really, their main aim is to save some pride against a German steamroller.
Bayern riding high 
Even Vincent Kompany probably didn’t see that first-leg spectacle coming. With Harry Kane kept warm on the bench, Bayern steamrolled Atalanta. No Kane? No problem. They ripped in six in Italy. Michael Olise ran the show (two goals, one assist), and Nicolas Jackson and Serge Gnabry chipped in with goals and assists.
For Bayern to blow that lead would take a proper disaster. Kompany might rest Kane again and give Jackson another go. Trouble is Jackson lost his head at the weekend — sent off for a reckless challenge at Leverkusen. Bayern were later reduced to nine after Luis Diaz saw red, yet they still nicked a draw (1-1). A slip-up with no impact on their European fortress at the Allianz. The stat is brutal: the club has progressed in 28 of its last 29 two-legged ties after winning the first leg away.
Atalanta staring at a mess 
Last week left deep wounds for Atalanta. That 6-1 collapse matches their worst European thrashing (the 5-0 at Liverpool in 2020-21). The brief for Raffaele Palladino’s men is simple: don’t make it worse. They showed a flicker of fight with a draw at Inter (1-1) at the weekend — trailing early at San Siro before Nikola Krstovic dragged them level late.
That point stops back-to-back defeats, but the table still stings. Atalanta sit seven points behind surprise pack-leaders Como in the top-four race. They’re a long way off the front and turning into one of Italy’s big disappointments this season.
