Stuttgart v Porto: ambitious clash at the MHPArena
Tonight the MHPArena will be rocking for a rare first. VfB Stuttgart meet FC Porto in the first leg of the Europa League last 16. The Germans had to slog through the play-offs to get here; the Dragons booked their place straight through a tidy group-stage showing.
Stuttgart thrive at home
They hammered Celtic 4-1 in the first leg and a 1-0 reverse in Glasgow was a mere footnote. That loss is the only real hiccup for a side that has scored in each of its last 11 outings across all competitions.
Back at this stage for only the second time this century, Stuttgart want to ride their home form. In front of their fans they set the tone: five wins from their last seven home matches in 2026, and plenty of heavy-scoring nights (four games with at least three goals). The big worry? A defence that leaks too often in Europe — no clean sheets in their last five continental matches. And they’re running low on league gas, as a gritty 2-2 draw at Mainz last weekend showed.
Porto suffer away blues
The Portuguese side are still reeling after last week’s fiery “O Classico” with Benfica. Leading by two thanks to Victor Froholdt and Oskar Pietuszewski, Francesco Farioli’s men collapsed in the second half and had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
They still sit top of the Primeira Liga with a four-point cushion, but this mental slip underlines their struggles away from the Dragon. On the road it’s grim: one win in their last five trips (including a 1-0 cup defeat to Sporting). European away form isn’t much better — three straight trips without a win. Still, finishing 5th in the league phase showed they’ve got the depth to go far, and they’ll dream of a quarter-final run — something they haven’t done since 2011.
Likely line-ups
Stuttgart : Nubel ; Assignon, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstadt ; Karazor, Stiller ; El Khannouss, Undav, Leweling ; Demirovic
Porto : D Costa ; A Costa, Bednarek, Kiwior, Zaidu ; Froholdt, Varela, Veiga ; Pepe, Gul, Gomes
Football Prediction Stuttgart vs Porto
Stuttgart to win
On paper both sides have hit a bit of a lull in recent weeks. But the MHPArena is a pressure cooker that lifts Stuttgart.
Against a Portuguese team solid at the back but prone to falling apart away from home, Stuttgart’s firepower should eventually tell. Expect a tight, tactical scrap, but Stuttgart have the tools to pick the lock and nick a narrow, valuable home victory.

Quick word on our tips
- What we publish on Mathodds are analyses and opinions — nothing more. We offer a read on the moment, not a guarantee. Sport is messy and unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal… and everything flips.
- Let’s be blunt: there’s no risk-free bet. Even the “obvious” ones can blow up. Yes, that means you can lose. And you will, at some point.
- Be sensible. Stake small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And for the love of common sense, don’t chase losses — it rarely ends well.
- Betting should be a pastime, not a job or a source of income. If it’s taking over your life, getting you wound up or stressing you, step away. Talk to a specialist organisation if you need to. That’s what they’re for.
- Ultimately, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means you accept the risk exists and it won’t disappear, however good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: betting is restricted to adults and must follow your local laws. Gambling can spiral (financial losses, family strain, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No promises from us

Information can change
A prediction is based on what we know when we write it. Between publication and kick-off, line-ups change, players get hurt, weather turns nasty… and the analysis can become outdated. We can’t be held liable for that.
