Washington Capitals – Calgary Flames: a clash of beaten teams at the Capital One Arena National Hockey League - Wikipedia

Tonight we’re parked at Capital One Arena for a game that’ll be forgotten by morning. Washington hosts Calgary — two clubs that’ve basically thrown in the towel on the playoffs and are sliding hard on confidence.

Rosters have been shuffled recently. What should we expect on the ice? We tear apart the current trends and then drop our pick.

Washington sputtering undefined

The Capitals flashed a pulse with two wins right after the Olympic break, then the bubble burst: three straight losses followed. Normally Ovechkin and co. light it up at home (often over three goals a night), but the attack has seized up.

Last outing? A grim 3-1 loss to Boston to close the week. Spencer Carbery’s side got outshot, took 12 minutes of sloppy penalties and completely collapsed in the third period. Result: a sorry 12th place in the East. It’s jarring to see former regular-season kings scraping the bottom.

The dressing room’s been shaken too. Veteran John Carlson has left, leaving Jakob Chychrun to shoulder most of the defensive hope. Up the middle, Nic Dowd is gone and Czech David Kämpf has stepped in. In short: a team in overhaul where even Alexander Ovechkin’s numbers are slipping dangerously.

March has been a slog for Calgary. Ryan Huska’s men finally stopped a four-game skid with a wild 5-4 win over Carolina — helped by the Hurricanes being on the second night of a back-to-back and folding in the middle period, and then the Flames nearly throwing it away in the last 20.

The Calgary Flames try to play on the road (roughly a bit over two goals per game), but the attack looks thin on paper. Between Nazem Kadri being moved on and Jonathan Huberdeau being injured, it’s hard to see this forward line finding any regularity.

The only silver lining is the blue line: the arrivals of Zach Whitecloud and Olli Määttä should help plug holes and calm things down at the back.

NHL pick Washington Capitals vs Calgary Flames

Under 5 goals in the match

You’ve got two teams that often start games okay and then die out late because they lack legs and depth.

Look at the numbers: the “Under 5.5 goals” market hit in 8 of the Calgary Flames’ last 9 road games! Add a Calgary attack shredded by Kadri and Huberdeau absences, a Washington side bereft of offensive ideas and an Ovechkin feeling the wear, and you’ve got everything for a tight, scrappy, low-scoring affair. We’re backing the Under 5.5 without second-guessing it!

First — a word on our picks

  • What we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. We give an opinion, a snapshot read of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a fluke goal… and the whole script flips.
  • Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, nothing ever truly is. And yes, that means you can lose. It will happen at some point.
  • Play sensibly. Stake small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And don’t chase losses — that almost never ends well.
  • Betting should stay a hobby, not a job or income source. If it takes over your life, annoys you or stresses you out, take a break. And if needed, contact a specialist service. That’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility rests with you. Reading our content means accepting the risk is real and won’t vanish, even with the best analysis in the world.
  • Important reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must follow your country’s laws. Gambling can spiral (financial losses, family tensions, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.

No commitment from us

Information can change

A prediction is based on what we know when we write it. Between then and game time a lineup can change, a player can get injured, the weather can turn… and the analysis can become obsolete. We can’t be held responsible for that.
