West Ham United – Brentford: a London derby to close the fifth round undefined

Monday night at the London Stadium wraps up the FA Cup last-16 with a proper Premier League scrap: West Ham United against Brentford. The Hammers needed a hefty slice of luck to get past Burton Albion last time, while Brentford smashed Macclesfield’s fairy tale to reach this stage.

West Ham United find some spark undefined

Survival in the top flight is the priority for Nuno Espirito Santo and co, but a Cup run never hurts. Trouble is, West Ham haven’t exactly bossed this edition. They’ve had to scrap past QPR and then Burton Albion by the skin of their teeth — the Burton tie went to extra time and Crysencio Summerville’s 95th-minute strike finally pulled them out of trouble.

Brentford have been a thorn for the Hammers in recent years. West Ham have repeatedly failed at this stage in their last three attempts (2021–2023) and haven’t seen the quarter-finals in a decade. Still, form is improving: six wins and just two slips in their last ten in all competitions, plus a handy 1-0 win over Fulham. They’re still in the relegation fight but have closed in on Nottingham Forest and a wobbling Tottenham, helped by four home matches unbeaten.

Brentford, the European dream still alive Brentford FC logo

Keith Andrews’ side avoided the kind of shock Crystal Palace suffered last round. Against minnows Macclesfield the Bees relied on a fortunate own goal in the second half to do the job and send the amateurs packing. It was ugly, but it gets them to this stage for the first time since their return to the Premier League. Caveat: Brentford have lost at this phase three times running, and their last quarter-final appearance was ages ago (1989).

Since that unconvincing win, Brentford have stuttered: a home defeat to Brighton, a narrow escape at Burnley and a dull 0-0 at Bournemouth on their last trip. That draw, at least, stretched their away unbeaten run to five matches. The European dream isn’t dead — they already handed West Ham a 2-0 hiding at the London Stadium back in October.

Probable line-ups

West Ham United : Areola ; Walker-Peters, Mavropanos, Disasi, Scarles ; Bowen, Fernandes, Magassa, Summerville ; Wilson, Castellanos

Brentford : Valdimarsson ; Kayode, Pinnock, Ajer, Lewis-Potter ; Yarmoliuk, Henderson ; Ouattara, Damsgaard, Schade ; Thiago

Football Prediction West Ham vs Brentford

Draw

With both teams showing very similar form (identical runs over the last six matches) and both mainly focused on league survival or position for very different reasons, naming a clear winner inside 90 minutes would be wishful thinking.

Expect intensity. This derby should serve up a proper scrap. Backed by their home crowd and picking up momentum, the Hammers look capable of pushing the tie all the way — probably through to penalties after 120 minutes of graft.

First—a word on our predictions

  • What we publish on Mathodds is analysis and opinion, nothing more. We offer a view, a snapshot of what looks likely right now, not a promise. Sport is unpredictable. A red card, a calf injury, a freak goal… and the story flips.
  • Be clear: every bet carries risk. Even when something looks “obvious”, it can still go wrong. Yes, that means you can lose. You will, at some point.
  • Stay sensible. Stake small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And whatever you do, don’t chase losses — that rarely ends well.
  • Betting should stay a form of entertainment, not a job or income source. If it’s taking over, irritating you or stressing you out, take a break. If needed, talk to a specialist organisation. That’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means you accept the risk exists and won’t vanish, even with the best analysis in the world.
  • Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must follow your country’s laws. Gambling can spiral (money loss, family tension, addiction). Need help? Players Info Service: 09 74 75 13 13 (standard-rate call) https://www.gambleaware.org/.
