Lens – Rennes: Eyeing the top spot 
Saturday night Bollaert Delelis will be boiling. As usual. Lens host Rennes with a single plan: hit hard, grab a temporary lead in Ligue 1 and up the pressure on Paris. Last week Lens did the job against Le Havre — a tight but vital 1-0. Meanwhile Rennes were swept aside at Monaco, 4-0, and slipped to sixth. Two runs heading the opposite way. This one could blow up.
Lens: a fortress back on track 
That pounding at Marseille stung. A 3-1 that briefly halted their momentum and dropped Lens to second. The response was instant. Clean. No-nonsense. Mostly defensive. In the next match Pierre Sage’s side found their DNA: compact block, relentless pressure, clinical at the back. Result: a fourth clean sheet in five games in 2026. At Bollaert you can feel it — nobody breathes.
On Saturday Lens can string together a tenth straight home win across all competitions. Ten. And they’ve conceded at most one goal in each of them. In the league they have five successive home wins without conceding. They turn every home visit into a trap. A win would also mean a perfect start to the year — three wins from three in the league — the first time since their return to the top flight.
Then there’s Rennes. A team that never enjoys playing at Lens. Eleven matches unbeaten against the Bretons in Ligue 1, including last season’s 1-0. That run breeds a certain swagger.
Rennes: a sudden collapse and growing doubts 
Two weeks ago Rennes looked one of the steadiest sides in the league. Eight of nine games picking up at least a point, a European spot sat comfortable. Then it splintered: three straight defeats in all competitions. A blunt exit from the French Cup at Marseille, 3-0, followed by a collapse at Monaco, 4-0 — it left scars. Now Habib Beye’s men have only a one-point cushion over Strasbourg for the final European place.
On the road the numbers are worrying. Two losses in their last three Ligue 1 away trips. And a defense that keeps folding: six away games this season where Rennes have shipped at least two. Nine goals conceded over their last three league road matches. Against Lens recent history doesn’t help — no competitive win here since 2014. A few draws nicked, yes, but never the feeling of really taking control.
