Sunderland – Burnley : two newly promoted teams clash
This isn’t the prettiest fixture on the card, but the points count. Sunderland host Burnley on Monday to wrap up Matchweek 24 — two promoted teams, two very different trajectories.
Sunderland : keep the home record alive
They kicked off the season and surprised a few people. Quietly promoted, Sunderland slipped into the top half early on and then, predictably, settled back down to earth. The recent run has lost pace — one win from the last six league games is thin.
That single victory, though, came at the Stadium of Light against Crystal Palace and it reminds you of something crucial: Sunderland are rock-solid at home. Seriously solid. On the road they fall apart more quickly. Last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at West Ham underlined a pattern. They travel badly, lose control and give up valuable points. At the Stadium of Light it’s a different story — still unbeaten in the league this season. No club has a cleaner home record. At this stage, that matters.
Burnley : the clock is ticking
Burnley are inching forward, but barely. The 2-2 draw with Tottenham last time out summed up their season: effort and discipline, but something always missing to turn decent displays into wins. It’s been ages since Scott Parker’s side last took three points. Fourteen matches without a league win, stuck in 19th, and they look like they’re running in circles. They’re not collapsing — but they’re not flying either.
Away form is even harsher. Burnley haven’t kept a clean sheet on the road this season. Turf Moor memories don’t travel well: one win in the last 12 away trips. Their earlier victory over Sunderland now feels like an outlier. The reality of top-level football has caught up with them, and they’ll need grit to make themselves count in fixtures like this.
Likely Lineups
Sunderland :
Roefs ; Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Cirkin ; Diarra, Sadiki ; Hume, Le Fée, Talbi ; Brobbey
Burnley :
Dubravka ; Humphreys, Esteve, Tuanzebe ; Walker, Ugochukwu, Florentino, Pires ; Edwards, Anthony ; Foster
Football Prediction Sunderland vs Burnley
Sunderland to win
Don’t expect a thriller. This is two teams on different runs. Sunderland lock things down at home; Burnley still can’t turn good work into wins.
In a tight spot, home advantage looks decisive. Low on chances, tight at the back, and a narrow Sunderland win is the likeliest outcome.

First — a word on our tips
- The stuff we publish on Mathodds are analyses, nothing more. It’s our view at a given moment, not a promise. Sport stays unpredictable. A red card, a late injury, an out-of-nowhere goal — and the whole script changes.
- Let’s be blunt: there’s no risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, it isn’t. Yes, you can lose. You will lose sometimes — that’s the point.
- Play it sensible. Stake small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need for life. And under no circumstances chase losses — that almost never ends well.
- Betting is entertainment, not a job or income stream. If it’s taking over, making you angry or stressed, step back. Talk to a specialist if you need to. That’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, it’s your responsibility. Reading our content means you accept the risk remains, no matter how sharp the analysis.
- Important reminder: gambling is prohibited to minors and you must follow your local laws. Betting can spiral (losses, family strain, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No guarantees from us
Our tips are not a contract. They carry no legal weight. In short: you can’t hold us responsible if a bet loses.
Information can change
A tip is based on what we know when we write it. Team sheets change, injuries happen, weather turns — and the analysis can go out of date fast. We can’t be held liable for that.
Your role
Before betting, make sure gambling is legal where you are. If it isn’t, that’s your problem, not ours.
