NBA: Dallas wins the glass 63-45 and buries Utah behind Flagg

Utah shoots better and still loses

Utah made 15 of 39 threes. Dallas made 9 of 32. That is a six-triple edge for the Jazz, and they still lost 112-100 in an NBA Cup group game on Friday. The Mavericks forced 21 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 63-45, which more than covered the gap.

P.J. Washington led Dallas with 26 points. Cooper Flagg finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals, and his total matched that of teammate Kyrie Irving. Irving scored 14, so three Mavericks starters reached double figures.

The bench and the glass

Dallas outscored Utah’s reserves 44-19. Morez Johnson Jr. had 13 points and 17 rebounds, 10 of them offensive, and the Mavericks piled up a 20-5 edge in second-chance points. Walter Clayton Jr. and Josh Okogie scored 12 apiece off the bench.

The game turned late in the first half. Utah led 42-35 before Dallas went on a 19-7 run, capped by a Washington three with 2:31 left for a 54-49 lead. The Jazz tied it at 57 by halftime, then the Mavericks took the third quarter 32-19 and opened the fourth with seven straight points to build a 20-point cushion.

A seventh straight loss for Utah

Lauri Markkanen scored all 24 of his points on 8-of-15 shooting from three, and rookie Darryn Peterson had 21. Keyonte George added 16 points and nine rebounds. None of it was enough. This was Utah’s seventh consecutive defeat, and it was also the third loss in a row on a four-game road trip that is not going well so far.
