Barry takes over after Gboho’s opener
Everton were second best for long spells on Friday night, then flipped the game in five minutes. Yann Gboho slalomed through the Everton box to put Coventry ahead in the 52nd minute, his first goal for the club. Thierno Barry answered in the 56th with a back-post header from a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall cross, and he nodded in a near-identical goal in the 61st to make it 2-1.
Those were Barry’s ninth and tenth goals of the season, and Everton’s only fit striker made the most of it. He also supplied the pass for the third, sliding Dewsbury-Hall through to finish at the near post in the 81st minute. Dewsbury-Hall had been left out of the England squad by Thomas Tuchel earlier in the day, and his reply came quickly.

Three VAR calls leave Lampard fuming
The result was only half the story. Before the break, James Tarkowski stayed on the pitch after an apparent hair pull on Caleb Yirenkyi, with VAR clearing both that and a possible handball. Early in the second half, Taiwo Awoniyi went down under Vitalii Mykolenko, but the review placed the contact outside the area.
The loudest complaint came after Barry’s second. Coventry argued the forward used a hand, yet VAR found no conclusive angle and the goal stood. Frank Lampard said VAR “didn’t do its job” and argued the hair pull should have been a foul and a penalty. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp agreed the first two were penalty shouts, while accepting the Barry check was hard to overturn.
What it means in the table
David Moyes admitted his side did not hit the heights of recent weeks but took the three points. Everton climb to fifth, moving above Liverpool for at least 48 hours. Coventry sit two points clear of the relegation zone and could drop into the bottom three by Sunday night.
