A quick promotion in St. Louis
The St. Louis Cardinals have a new general manager, and he comes from inside the building. Rob Cerfolio, 34, was promoted on Friday after two years as an assistant GM. He will keep reporting to Chaim Bloom, the club’s president of baseball operations.
Cerfolio fills the vacancy left by Randy Flores, a longtime Cardinals executive who became general manager of the Houston Astros last week.
Bloom praised Cerfolio in the team’s announcement for driving progress in player development from top to bottom and for building up the performance group and tying it into the rest of the organization. He described him as relentless and said he is invested in relationships with new hires and long-serving staff alike.

Who Cerfolio is
Cerfolio arrived in St. Louis in 2024. Before that he spent nine years in the Cleveland Guardians’ front office, from 2015 to 2024, and finished there as director of player development.
He also played. A right-handed pitcher at Yale, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 34th round in 2013 but did not sign, and he graduated in 2014.
The job ahead
The Cardinals finished 77-85 in 2026 and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season. They have not won a postseason series since 2019. Cerfolio inherits that record, and Bloom has said he wants the club to set the standard for the industry in every area of baseball operations.
