Brest vs Lyon: three visits without a win and a Europa League trip on Thursday
Lyon’s last two away games ended 3-0 at Hoffenheim and 2-0 at PSG. Their next one comes at Brest on Sunday 8 November, 16:15 UK time, three days after a Europa League trip to Real Sociedad.
Lyon’s position is strong on the table. They’re third on 17 points from nine matches, with 15 scored and seven conceded, while Brest are 10th on 12 points with a 16-12 goal record.
Our doubt concerns the schedule. Thursday’s game kicks off at 17:45 UK time in San Sebastian, which leaves Paulo Fonseca’s side less than three full days before they step out in Brittany. Brest last played on 2 November and will have had six days to prepare.
The ground has also been awkward for this opponent. Lyon haven’t won on their last three league visits to Brest: a 1-0 defeat in September 2023, a 2-1 defeat in January 2025 and a 0-0 draw in November 2025.
The prices lean to the visitors, with Lyon at 2.30, the draw at 3.60 and Brest at 2.88. We prefer the home side’s double chance at 1.57, because the two teams’ recent paths don’t support that order.
Brest: 2-0 at Lorient and four games in a row with a goal
Brest’s 2-0 win at Lorient on 2 November moved them to 12 points and up to 10th. It was their second win in four league games after the 5-1 against Angers on 10 October.
Between those wins, they drew 1-1 at Lille and lost 2-1 at home to Nice. Scoring at Lille, who’ve conceded six all season, is the result we’d point to when judging the level of this team.
Their goal difference of plus four is half Lyon’s plus eight. Sixteen league goals is one more than Lyon have scored, which is unusual for a side five points below them, and the 5-1 against Angers accounts for a large share of it.
Brest’s last five matches, a friendly with Monza included, have produced 11 goals scored and six conceded, with both teams scoring in four of them. The record suggests they’ll create chances and also allow some, and we’d expect Lyon to score here.
No detailed team news has been published for Sunday at the time of writing, so their selection stays an open question. The Lorient win was at least a clean sheet to build on before a week’s rest.
The head-to-head points to goals as well as to Brest’s home record. Both teams scored in four of the last six meetings, including Lyon’s 4-3 win in April 2024 and three separate 2-1 results. A Brest win on Sunday would lift them to 15 points, two behind Lyon, which is why we don’t expect them to sit back and play for a draw.

Lyon: third in the table, two away defeats, and five players out
Lyon’s home record has carried them. Their last three home wins came 3-2 against Crystal Palace, 2-1 against Nice and 2-0 against Angers, and their seven league goals conceded are among the numbers that keep them third.
Away from home they’ve scored none in their last two matches, and they also lost 2-1 at Lens this season. Fonseca’s side have conceded five in those two most recent trips.
The Europa League adds to the load. Lyon are 12th in the league phase on six points, with four games still to play after Thursday, so Fonseca can’t treat the game at Real Sociedad lightly, and his side are facing a team that has scored 18 in its last six matches.
The injury list is long. Nicolas Tagliafico, Mohamed Ouedraogo, Tyler Morton, Pavel Sulc and Lois Openda were all reported out for Thursday, and that’s a lot of cover gone for a squad with two games in 72 hours.
Noah Nartey, 21, has scored twice from midfield and Keito Nakamura is expected to start in attack in San Sebastian. How much of that side can go again on Sunday is the question Fonseca will need to answer.
The five-match sample is less flattering than the league table. Lyon have scored seven and conceded eight across their last five in all competitions, one more than the seven they’ve let in over nine league games. Those five results were two defeats by a combined 5-0 and three wins, all at home and two of them by a single goal.
Real Sociedad add to that concern. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side are 14th in the Europa League table and won 6-0 at Lillestrom on 22 October, with Luka Sucic on six goals this season. Fonseca will need his senior players on Thursday, and that’s a direct cost to whoever he picks at Brest.

Our prediction: Brest or draw (double chance) at 1.57
We’re siding with Brest not to lose. Lyon have failed to win on their last three visits here, they’ve lost their last two away games by an aggregate 5-0, and they’ll arrive with less than three days’ rest.
Lyon sit five points and seven places higher, and they’ve won three of the last six meetings. Our answer is that those wins came at home, and this game doesn’t.
At 1.57 the double chance covers both the home win and the draw. With Openda, Sulc and Tagliafico missing and a European game in the legs, we’d expect Lyon to find this harder than the prices suggest.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
