Tennis: Van Assche avenges Vienna loss to knock out Tien

Revenge in two tight sets

Seven days after losing to Learner Tien in two short sets in Vienna, Luca Van Assche turned the result around at the Rolex Paris Masters. The Frenchman, ranked 47th, beat the 15th seed 7-6(4), 6-4 in 2 hours and 3 minutes on Court 1.

The first set went to a tiebreak, and Van Assche closed it with a forehand winner. He broke early in the second to lead 2-0, Tien pulled back to 2-2, and the set stayed level until 4-4. There, Van Assche earned five break points to move 5-3 ahead and serve for the win. Tien saved them all. The Frenchman still got over the line, taking the set 6-4.

A big draw ahead

Tien needed treatment on his nose early in the first set but stayed in the contest to the end. A week earlier the margins had gone the other way, and this time the Frenchman made them count.

It was a strong afternoon for the French contingent. Quentin Halys saved four match points to beat Frances Tiafoe, and Arthur Rinderknech won in straight sets. Van Assche’s reward is a third-round match against Lorenzo Musetti, who beat world No. 1 Alexander Zverev 7-6(5), 6-2 shortly afterwards on the Central Court.
