Struff closes the door on a breakout year
Arthur Géa reached the quarter-finals in Shanghai this autumn, which is why the Rolex Paris Masters gave him a main-draw wild card. On Tuesday night, Jan-Lennard Struff made short work of that story, winning 7-6, 6-3 on Court 1 in Nanterre.
Géa was the last Frenchman in action that day. The opening set went to a tie-break and Struff took it, finishing the first set with a serve-and-volley point. Géa did not recover from that, and the second set belonged to the German.

A mixed day for France
Géa was one of five French players in the first round on Tuesday, and the day finished with two wins and three defeats. Quentin Halys beat Arthur Fery 7-6, 7-5 and Arthur Rinderknech advanced when Francisco Cerundolo retired in the third set. Rinderknech had lost the first set 3-6, won the second in a tie-break and led 2-0 in the decider.
Benjamin Bonzi, who came through qualifying, lost to the 11th seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 earlier in the evening on the same court, and Moïse Kouamé was beaten by Nuno Borges. Fritz now plays qualifier Alex Molcan in the next round.
