Champions League: Doumbia strike sees Sporting past Shakhtar

One goal, 59 minutes in

Shakhtar Donetsk had the ball and Sporting had the result. Doumbia scored in the 59th minute at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening, and that was enough for a 1-0 Sporting win in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase.

The match was goalless at the break. Arda Turan’s Shakhtar, lined up in a 4-1-4-1, then fell behind an hour in and could not find an equaliser.

The numbers favoured the losing side. Shakhtar finished with 54 percent possession and 437 passes to Sporting’s 370, a gap of 67. They also led 4-3 on shots on target, which makes the scoreline harsher on them than the stats alone suggest.

A scrappy finish

Sporting lined up in a 3-4-1-2 and committed 18 fouls to Shakhtar’s 10. Maxi Araujo was booked for the visitors in the 66th minute, and Isaque picked up Shakhtar’s only caution in the 74th.

Both sides used the bench after the goal. Shakhtar swapped Mendoza for Newerton and Nazaryna for Isaque in the 67th, while Sporting replaced Doumbia with Joao Simoes in the 88th minute. Ivan Kruzliak refereed, and the game ran four minutes into added time.
