Serie A: Da Cunha’s penalty gives Como a 1-0 win over Venezia

A penalty settles a tight afternoon

Como took a single goal and kept hold of it. Da Cunha, the Como captain, converted a penalty in the 43rd minute at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, and that was the only goal of the match as Cesc Fabregas’s side beat Venezia 1-0 on Serie A matchday ten.

The first half had already produced its drama. In the 27th minute the referee, Maria Ferrieri Caputi, went to the VAR monitor over a penalty appeal, and after the review the decision was reversed: no spot-kick. Sixteen minutes later Como got the penalty they could keep, and Da Cunha did not miss.

Control without a cushion

Como dominated the ball, with 66% possession and 719 passes against Venezia’s 375. They also created more clear chances, putting four shots on target to the visitors’ one. Even so, the lead stayed at a single goal until the final whistle, which came after six minutes of stoppage time.

Venezia, coached by Davide Nicola, had two players booked: Sohm and Juan Jesus went into the referee’s book within two minutes of each other late in the first half. Kaiki was the only Como player cautioned, in the 86th minute.
