Tennis: Fils says he’s fine for Paris after Basel scare

Fils shuts down the doubts

Arthur Fils will play the Paris Masters. The French number one confirmed it on Sunday, calling his participation “100 percent” and saying the body feels fine, two days after he pulled out of the Basel quarter-finals.

“I’m going to train this afternoon,” he said. “In Basel, I didn’t want to make things worse than I thought they were.” The 22-year-old is ranked eighth in the world and seventh in the Race, so a clean week at Bercy matters for the season-ending standings.

A back with a history

Officially, Fils retired in Basel with a left leg problem. On court he looked bothered lower down, on the left side of the back, which is where the stress fracture that kept him out for months in 2025 had been. That is why Friday’s exit set off alarms in France, with the home crowd waiting on him all week.

His tournament starts in round two. He is exempt from the first round and will face the winner of the match between fellow Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet and either a qualifier or another exempt player.

Training this afternoon is the real test. A practice session is one thing; a best-of-three match is another.
