Maple Leafs beat Canucks 4-2, NHL news

NHL: Toronto start fast and beat sliding Vancouver 4-2

Nylander sets the tone

It took William Nylander 83 seconds to put Toronto in front in Vancouver on Saturday, and the Maple Leafs never really lost the thread. They beat the Canucks 4-2 to end a two-game losing streak. Nylander finished with a goal and an assist, and so did Teddy Blueger.

Brock Boeser tied it on the power play at 10:30 of the first, but Auston Matthews restored the lead early in the second, and Zack MacEwen, a former Canuck, made it 3-1 at 12:34.

Vancouver’s slide goes on

Max Sasson pulled one back at 9:27 of the third, set up when Anthony Stolarz stopped a Brendan Gallagher shot but could not control the rebound. Blueger then iced it with an empty-netter at 18:24. Stolarz made 26 saves and picked up his third assist of the season, while Leevi Merilainen stopped 24 for Vancouver.

The numbers behind the Canucks are grim. They are 1-11-1 in their last 13 games and have yet to beat an Eastern Conference opponent this season. Stolarz was also beaten by Boeser on a breakaway earlier in the game.

Toronto got two bodies back as well. Chris Tanev returned for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury on Oct. 10, and Dakota Joshua played his first game of the season.
