AZ Alkmaar vs Juventus: one point from three league games against a depleted Juve
Peer Koopmeiners scored AZ’s opener against Hapoel Be’er Sheva on 15 October. On Thursday his brother Teun, a former AZ captain, is very likely to play for Juventus at the AFAS Stadion, where kick-off is 20:00 UK time on 5 November.
It’s the first competitive meeting between the clubs. AZ’s record against Italian sides reads nine games, six wins, one draw and two defeats, including 2-1 wins home and away against Lazio in the 2022-23 Conference League and a 1-0 win over Roma in 2024-25.
Both sides have started the league phase reasonably well. AZ have six points from a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland, a 2-1 home win over Hapoel and a 4-0 win at Ararat-Armenia. Juventus have seven after beating NEC 5-0, winning 2-1 at Celta and drawing 2-2 with Rennes in Turin.
Domestic form is where the gap opens up, and it doesn’t favour AZ. They’ve taken one point from their last three Eredivisie games, losing 2-0 at home to Twente on 25 October and 1-0 at Ajax on Saturday, Ajax’s first win over AZ in four years.
Juventus have their own problems. They lost 2-0 at Genoa on 28 October in Luciano Spalletti’s 50th game in charge, and they were held to 1-1 at Cagliari and beaten 3-0 at home by Lazio earlier in the month.
I’d still rather be on the side with Kolo Muani and Woltemade up front than on a home side that hasn’t scored in its last two league games.
AZ Alkmaar: two league games without a goal after a 4-0 night in Armenia
AZ’s Europa League nights have been better than their weekends. Byskov opened the scoring with a free kick in Yerevan, Patati added two and Mexx Meerdink finished it off. Against Hapoel, Peer Koopmeiners scored early in the second half and Meerdink converted a late penalty.
The Eredivisie run has turned the other way. AZ drew 2-2 at Cambuur on 18 October, then lost 2-0 to Twente with goals on 84 and 90+3 minutes, then 1-0 at Ajax to an Arokodare header. They’re fifth with 20 points from 11 games, five behind leaders Feyenoord.
Leeroy Echteld is in charge. His side scored 20 times in those 11 league games and conceded 13, so the defence isn’t the issue. What has gone missing is the finishing: AZ haven’t scored a league goal since the 2-2 at Cambuur on 18 October.
Kees Smit is out for one to two weeks, Stije Resink has a knee injury that keeps him out until January, and Jizz Hornkamp is day-to-day.
Meerdink has two Europa League goals and Patati two. Byskov, signed from Midtjylland on 31 August for €5.5m, was man of the match against Hapoel. The opening-night defeat at Sunderland came from a single Le Fée penalty, and the 4-0 in Yerevan is AZ’s only European clean sheet so far.

Juventus: seven European points with half a team in the treatment room
Juventus’s injury list would weaken any squad. Yıldız has a broken foot and isn’t due back until early December. Conceição is out until mid-November with a shoulder problem, Locatelli has a meniscus injury that runs to March, Thuram is out until January and Grabara won’t play again this season. Ekhator is a doubt with a thigh problem.
Spalletti’s strikers are still scoring. Nick Woltemade, on a season-long loan from Newcastle since 1 September, has three Europa League goals, including a penalty against Rennes. Kolo Muani, signed from PSG on 2 August, scored the stoppage-time header that won the game in Vigo.
Serie A has been patchy. Juventus had 14 points from nine games before Sunday’s game against Napoli: a 2-0 win at Lecce with goals from McKennie and Douglas Luiz, then the 2-0 loss at Genoa three days later.
The defence has been the weak point. Juventus conceded twice to Rennes, three times to Lazio and twice at Genoa, and only the NEC game produced a clean sheet in Europe.
Çelik, a free signing from Roma in July, has scored twice in this competition, against NEC and Rennes. Zhegrova and Bremer have two Serie A goals each, and Teun Koopmeiners is very likely to play against the club he once captained.

Our prediction: Juventus to win (1.95)
AZ haven’t scored in 180 minutes of league football and have one point from three Eredivisie games. Juventus have injuries, but they’ve scored in all three European games and won away at Celta and at Lecce in the last six weeks.
The case against is real. Juventus lost at Genoa four days before this preview and their defence has conceded in most games. AZ’s European form at home, a 2-1 win over Hapoel, is decent.
At 1.95, I’ll back the away side. Woltemade and Kolo Muani have six goals between them in all competitions, and AZ don’t have a scorer in that kind of form right now.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
