Excelsior vs FC Twente: nine goals conceded in two October league games Eredivisie

Daouda Weidmann won’t be in Rotterdam. Weidmann, who has three league goals and scored in stoppage time at Lincoln Red Imps on 22 October, is suspended after being sent off against AZ, and he joins Thorvaldsen, Lemkin and Bruns on the list of players John van den Brom can’t pick.

That’s the main complication for Twente on Sunday 1 November, when they visit Excelsior at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion, kick-off 13:30 UK time. It’s a smaller one than it sounds, because the side Van den Brom sends out is still fourth in the Eredivisie with 20 points, four behind leaders Feyenoord.

Excelsior are 13th with 11 points from ten games. Ruben den Uil’s side took nine points from their first four matches and two from the next six, and the slide has come with heavy defeats: 5-1 at home to Groningen on 11 October and 4-0 at Heerenveen five days later.

The last league game was tighter, a 1-0 defeat at Fortuna Sittard on 25 October, and on Wednesday they won 3-0 at MVV Maastricht in the KNVB Cup. Yegoian scored twice there, once from the penalty spot in the 89th minute, and E. Sierra opened the scoring after 15 minutes. Their last league win came in the opening four rounds of the season.

The head-to-head is closer than the table. Of the last six meetings, Excelsior won one, 1-0 at home in August 2025, and the last game between them, in January, finished 0-0 in Enschede. Twente’s last win at Woudestein was 3-0 in February 2024, and across 18 meetings in total Twente have won seven, Excelsior five, with six draws.

Excelsior: two points from their last six league games Excelsior

Excelsior’s home record explains why they’re drifting towards the bottom three. They’ve won one of four league games in Rotterdam and lost three, scoring five and conceding ten, and the Groningen defeat accounts for half of those goals against.

The positive is that they’ve scored in all four home games, including the 2-1 defeat by Utrecht on 13 September, and they drew 2-2 at Ajax six days later. Since 11 October, Excelsior have scored once in three league games.

Yegoian is their most influential player. He has three league goals and five assists, and Sliti and Garden have three goals each, with Simon Janssen adding three assists from full-back. Sliti also scored in the cup win at MVV.

Den Uil has no injuries to deal with and has named the same starting eleven for three games in a row. That stability hasn’t helped much in the league, where the same group lost at Heerenveen and Fortuna Sittard without scoring.

They’re five points clear of the bottom three. The cup win came with a clean sheet, but MVV play in the second tier, and the defence that conceded nine in two league games before Sittard is the one Twente will face.

FC Twente: fourth place, two European wins and a short-handed attack FC Twente

Twente have six wins, two draws and two defeats, with 19 goals scored and 10 conceded. The last week shows the range of what they can do: a 4-1 win at Lincoln Red Imps in the Conference League, then a 2-0 league win at AZ on 25 October.

The AZ result matters more than the scoreline in Gibraltar. AZ are level with Twente on 20 points, and winning there without conceding came a week after a 2-1 home defeat by Utrecht on 18 October, the result that stopped their momentum.

Weghorst leads the line with four league goals and two assists, though he hasn’t scored in the league since 20 September. Taha has three assists and Orjasaeter two, and the trio of Orjasaeter, Taha and Rots has 11 goal involvements between them, so the goals don’t depend on Weghorst alone.

Van den Belt is the other name to note. He scored twice at Lincoln, and with Weidmann suspended his role from midfield becomes bigger. Bart van Rooij is a doubt, and goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall is also unlikely to play, so Drommel is expected in goal.

Away from home Twente have won two, drawn two and lost one in the league, scoring nine and conceding five. They’ve conceded in four of those five games, which is the one weakness in an otherwise solid record. Their two league defeats came at home to Utrecht and in one of those five away games.

Probable lineup Excelsior: Van Gassel; Moreira, Widell, Plug, Janssen; Yegoian, Meissen, Hartjes; Sliti, Garden, Thorsteinsson
Probable lineup FC Twente: Drommel; Rosiak, Propper, Nijstad, Adelgaard; Zerrouki, Van den Belt; Rots, Taha, Orjasaeter; Weghorst

Our prediction: FC Twente to win at 1.57

Excelsior have lost three of four league games at home and conceded ten goals there, including five against Groningen. Twente are fourth, have won their last two games without much trouble, and have scored nine goals in five away league games.

The absences are the reason for caution. Weidmann, Thorvaldsen, Lemkin and Bruns are all out, and Twente have conceded in four of five away games, so Excelsior, who’ve scored in every home game, will probably get on the scoresheet.

But Twente have more ways to score than Excelsior have to stop them. With Taha, Orjasaeter and Rots creating and Weghorst due a league goal, I’d back the visitors to win at 1.57.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
