A rough night for Ligue 1’s runners-up
Rennes arrived on the Riviera with plenty to protect. They sat second in Ligue 1 and shared the league’s best attack with another club. They left with a 5-2 defeat and some uncomfortable questions about their back line.
Elye Wahi was the main reason. The Nice striker scored a hat-trick in a wide-open game on Friday night, the sort of evening that supporters at the Allianz Riviera rarely enjoyed last season, when goals and fun were hard to come by. L’Équipe described the home crowd as treated to a festival of attacking football.

What it means
Nice put five past a side that, before kickoff, had scored as freely as anyone in the division. Rennes did find the net twice, but conceding that many on a night when their attack was supposed to be the stronger side will sting.
For Nice, it is a statement of intent after a season in which their forwards struggled to produce. Wahi, who led the charge, now has a hat-trick to his name and the confidence that comes with it.
