Rugby: Furlong cleared by URC panel over Coombes claim

Unanimous verdict, no suspension

Tadhg Furlong will not miss a game. An independent United Rugby Championship disciplinary committee dismissed the complaint against the Leinster prop on Thursday, and the decision was made public this morning. The panel was unanimous.

The case stemmed from Leinster’s 24-18 win over Munster in Dublin on Saturday 24 October. Munster back-rower Gavin Coombes told referee Andrew Brace in the first half that Furlong had grabbed him. TMO Colin Stanley looked at the footage but found nothing conclusive, so no action was taken on the pitch.

The citing commissioner then stepped in under Law 9.27, which outlaws grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals and also covers acts against the spirit of good sportsmanship.

What the committee found

The hearing took place by video conference on Thursday 29 October. Simon Thomas chaired it, alongside Attie Heyns and Pamela Woodman. They concluded that Furlong had not committed an act of foul play under Law 9.27.

The panel also said Coombes had given an honest account of his recollection, and that the citing complaint was properly brought. A full written summary will follow from the URC as soon as reasonably practicable.

For Ireland, the practical point is availability. Furlong, 33, remains eligible for the Nations Championship matches against Argentina, Fiji and South Africa. Losing a prop of his experience for any of those would have hurt, and the verdict removes that worry before the squad gathers.
