Southampton vs Queens Park Rangers: 16 points from 18 at St Mary’s, six straight wins over QPR
Southampton have taken 16 points from a possible 18 at St Mary’s this season, the best home record in the Championship. Queens Park Rangers visit on Saturday 31 October, kick-off 15:00 UK time.
The two sides are level on 20 points. Southampton are sixth and QPR eighth, both three points off the automatic promotion places.
Tonda Eckert’s side started the season with a four-point deduction. Without it, they’d be second, and they’ve lost one of their last ten matches, 2-1 at Wrexham before the September international break.
QPR have only lost twice in the league this season and come in off a 5-0 win over Swansea, who are second in the table. Away from Loftus Road, though, Julien Stephan’s side haven’t won in four.
The head-to-head points one way. Southampton have beaten QPR in six consecutive league meetings.
Since 1992, league meetings at Southampton have finished five wins each, with two draws. The recent run has been all Southampton.
Southampton are 1.75 to win, the draw is 3.90 and QPR 4.20. Both teams to score is 1.53.
Southampton: three goals in 34 minutes at West Ham without their main striker
Southampton won 3-2 at West Ham last Saturday without Cyle Larin or Flynn Downes. Kuryu Matsuki, James Bree and Lewis Dobbin scored before the 34th minute, and Dobbin’s goal was his first in the Championship this season.
The five league games before that went 4-1 against Bristol City, 2-1 lost at Wrexham, 1-0 against Portsmouth, 1-0 at Norwich and 0-0 against Bolton. Three of them were wins.
They’ve scored five goals in their last four matches and taken ten points from them. The goals have dried up a little since the 4-1 against Bristol City, but the points haven’t.
Larin and Downes could both return, though the bench is the more likely place for them on Saturday. Dobbin is expected to lead the line again, with Matsuki, Azaz and Scienza behind him and James Ward-Prowse in midfield.
Over their last 20 matches Southampton have failed to score in two. At St Mary’s they’re unbeaten in six league games this season.
Their goal difference of +12 is the second best in the division, behind only West Ham. Bree and Manning are set to start at full-back, with Stephens and Schlotterbeck in the middle and Peretz in goal.

Queens Park Rangers: Kone’s hat-trick and no away win in four
Richard Kone scored a record-breaking early hat-trick against Swansea last weekend, and QPR won 5-0 against the side then top of the table.
QPR’s run before the Swansea win read 1-1 at West Brom, 2-2 against Preston, 1-1 at West Ham, 4-1 against Derby and 3-0 lost at Birmingham. Three draws in five kept them in touch without moving them up.
The 5-0 was also their first clean sheet in six games. They’ve failed to score in nine of their last 20 matches, and on the road they average 0.9 goals a game.
Tariq Lamptey, Niclas Madsen and Rumarn Burrell are still out. Boy Kemper has a knock but is expected to start at left-back, and Karamoko Dembele, recently back from injury, is likely to stay on the bench.
Stephan should stick with the side that beat Swansea, with Kone up front and Smyth, Poku, Vale and Kamara around him.
QPR drew at West Brom and West Ham, two of the current top five, and at home to Preston, who are now bottom. Four away games without a win is the other side of those results.
The trip to Birmingham, where QPR lost 3-0, is the closest match to this one: away at a promotion rival. They didn’t score that day.
Probable lineup Southampton: Peretz; Bree, Stephens, Schlotterbeck, Manning; Ward-Prowse, Jander; Matsuki, Azaz, Scienza; Dobbin
Probable lineup Queens Park Rangers: Charles; Adamson, Edwards, Dunne, Kemper; Poku, Varane, Kamara, Vale; Smyth, Kone

Our prediction: Southampton to win (odds 1.75)
Southampton have dropped two points at home all season, and they’ve beaten QPR six times in a row. QPR haven’t won any of their last four away games.
The 5-0 over Swansea is the result that worries me, and Kone is clearly in form. But that came at Loftus Road, where QPR have done most of their good work. Away from it they’ve gone four games without a win.
Southampton have also failed to score in only two of their last 20 matches. QPR have failed to score in nine of theirs.
I’d back Southampton at 1.75. They won at West Ham without their first-choice striker, and St Mary’s has been the hardest ground in the division to take anything from.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
