A tribute on hold
Didier Deschamps will get his send-off, only later than some hoped. Speaking to Ouest-France on Thursday, French federation president Philippe Diallo confirmed the plan to honour the former France coach. “I want it,” he said, adding that the right moment has to be found and that, given the calendar, 2027 is the year to think about.
Deschamps, 58, left the Bleus this summer after 14 years on the bench. He has stayed almost silent since, and he has not commented on the early run of his successor Zinédine Zidane. October looked like the natural window, with France hosting Italy and Belgium at the Stade de France. RMC Sport reported that the federation turned it down, preferring to keep the focus on Zidane’s return to the stadium where he made his name.

Where Deschamps goes next
The next home date is November 15 against Turkey in Bordeaux, but the mood inside the federation leans toward the spring for a ceremony.
Meanwhile his name has resurfaced in club football. Italian media say Juventus have put Deschamps on a shortlist in case Luciano Spalletti is dismissed, and weeks ago a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia was reported. He has always said he wants another job on a club bench once his time with France was over. A tribute from the federation and a new contract elsewhere could end up landing in the same season.
