Lyon vs Angers: eight home wins in a row against Sunday’s visitors Ligue 1

Lyon have won each of their last eight home league games against Angers, and the visitors haven’t taken a point off them in eight Ligue 1 meetings. That record is on the line at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday 1 November, kick-off 16:15 UK time, in a game that was meant to be played on Saturday night.

The Rhône prefecture asked for the change. A third national day of protests is planned for Saturday 31 October, police units are needed in town centres, and the league moved the fixture back by almost a full day. Nice against Rennes and Lorient against Brest were rescheduled for the same reason.

The table explains why Lyon can’t treat this as routine. Paulo Fonseca’s side are fifth, a point above Lens, after losing 2-0 at Paris Saint-Germain on Monday night, with Mika Godts and Senny Mayulu scoring. It was only their second league defeat of the season, but it pushed them out of the top four.

Angers arrive 14th, one point above Strasbourg in the play-off place and three clear of Troyes. Stéphane Gilli, the former Paris FC coach who replaced Alexandre Dujeux when Dujeux left for Lorient, has two wins from eight league games, and the latest result was a 0-0 draw at home to Lorient.

Both sides have been short of goals lately. Lyon have drawn a blank in their last two competitive matches, at the Parc des Princes and in a 3-0 Europa League defeat at Hoffenheim, while Angers have failed to score in two of their last six league games. I’d expect the first goal to carry more weight than usual on Sunday.

Lyon: five straight home wins, but no goal in two games Lyon

The home record is the strongest argument for Lyon. They’ve won five matches in a row at the Groupama Stadium across all competitions and scored 12 goals in that run, which includes a 4-0 win over Rennes, a 3-1 win against Auxerre and a 3-2 win over Crystal Palace.

Their defence has held up as well. Lyon have conceded five goals in Ligue 1, the joint second-lowest total in the division, and the only sides to beat them domestically are Lens, 2-1 at the Bollaert, and PSG.

The worry is in attack, and it’s largely an injury story. Pavel Sulc is out for around four months with a knee injury, Nicolas Tagliafico and Mohamed Ouedraogo are also sidelined with knee problems, and Lois Openda is listed among the injured.

Keito Nakamura is expected back. The winger missed the trip to PSG through suspension after a red card, and his return gives Fonseca a direct option out wide alongside Nuamah and Duranville. Without Sulc’s runs from midfield, more of the scoring falls to Merah through the middle.

The likely midfield of Tessmann, Morton and Tolisso is built to control possession rather than chase games, which suits a fixture where Lyon will have most of the ball. In their two league defeats this season, they scored once in total.

Fonseca’s back line is settled: Greif in goal, Kluivert and Niakhate in central defence, and Mata and Abner at full-back.

Angers: ten goals conceded in two games, then a goalless draw Angers

Angers’ season swings between two extremes. They can keep games tight, with 0-0 draws at Le Havre and at home to Lorient and a 2-0 win over Troyes, and they can also come apart: Brest beat them 5-1, and Marseille won 5-2 at their ground.

The Lorient draw came straight after that Marseille defeat. Anthony Lopes has two clean sheets this season, and his experience behind a back four of Arcus, Camara, Lefort and Kalulu is the main reason Angers can hope to stay level for an hour in Lyon.

Goals are harder for them to find. Angers have scored six times in their last six league games, and two of those came in the 5-2 defeat to Marseille.

Fitness is a concern in attack. Amine El Ouazzani, the likely starter up front, is listed as doubtful, as are Bane Diatta and Emmanuel Biumla. If El Ouazzani misses out, Allevinah is the probable replacement, with Sbai and Raolisoa on the flanks.

In midfield, Belkhdim and Van den Boomen are expected to sit in front of the defence, with Belkebla in the central attacking role. That pair will spend long spells without the ball against Tessmann, Morton and Tolisso.

History offers little encouragement either. Angers haven’t beaten Lyon in their last eight league meetings, and they’ve lost on each of their last eight league visits to Lyon.

Probable lineup Lyon: Greif; Mata, Kluivert, Niakhate, Abner; Tessmann, Morton, Tolisso; Nuamah, Merah, Duranville
Probable lineup Angers: Lopes; Arcus, Camara, Lefort, Kalulu; Belkhdim, Van den Boomen; Raolisoa, Belkebla, Sbai; El Ouazzani

Our prediction: Lyon to win and under 3.5 goals

Lyon’s home form and this head-to-head record point the same way. Five straight home wins, eight straight home wins against Angers and a defence that has conceded five league goals all season make the home win the starting point.

Adding under 3.5 goals reflects the injuries on both sides. Lyon have failed to score in their last two matches and are without Sulc, Angers have scored six goals in six league games, and their likely striker is a doubt.

The risk is a slow afternoon in which Lyon have the ball and Lopes keeps it level, which is how Lorient’s visit to Angers went last weekend. I’d still back Lyon to find one or two goals over 90 minutes, and a 1-0 or 2-0 fits what both teams have shown this autumn.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
