League Cup: Rulli saves two as Man City edge Brighton

City need a shootout to survive Brighton

The holders are through, but only just. Manchester City drew 2-2 with Brighton in the League Cup fourth round on Wednesday and won the shootout 4-3, thanks to two saves in a row from Geronimo Rulli, the former Marseille goalkeeper.

Brighton, third in the Premier League, were the better story for long stretches. They led 1-0, and after City levelled they went back in front at 2-1. Georginio Rutter was involved in both Brighton goals: he set up the first, then scored the second himself.

How City got level and got through

City pulled it back with a Rayan Cherki free kick that took a deflection off Vitor Reis in the 72nd minute. Nothing separated the sides after that, so it went to penalties.

Jason Steele denied Mateo Kovacic for Brighton, which looked like a turning point. It was not. Rulli answered with two saves in succession to send Enzo Maresca’s side into the quarterfinals.

The two clubs meet again on Saturday, this time in the Premier League.
