USA Perpignan vs RC Toulon: unbeaten at home against a side still waiting for an away win
Toulon have played three Top 14 games away from Mayol this season and lost all three, at Bayonne, Castres and Montpellier. The last of those, at Montpellier, finished 28-0. On Saturday night they go to Perpignan, where the home side haven’t lost a league game this season.
Kick-off is Saturday 31 October at 20:00 UK time, the late game in round 8. Toulon are eighth on 17 points with three wins and four defeats. Perpignan are tenth on 14, also with three wins and four defeats, and every one of those wins has come at home.
Toulon arrive off their best result of the season. They beat Pau, then second, 41-20 at Mayol last Saturday with the attacking bonus point, and Melvyn Jaminet scored three tries inside the first 30 minutes. Huw Jones got his first try for the club, and Oliver Cowie and Beka Gigashvili scored after the break.
Perpignan lost 38-33 at Toulouse on the same night and came away with a defensive bonus point. Toulouse led 38-7 around the hour mark, and Perpignan scored the last 26 points, finishing with five tries from five different players and denying the leaders a bonus of their own.
Both teams have reasons to feel good about themselves. I’d side with the one playing at home, because Toulon’s away results this season are bad enough to outweigh one big night at Mayol.
USA Perpignan: three home wins, and 26 unanswered points at Ernest-Wallon
Perpignan’s three league wins have come against Castres, Union Bordeaux-Begles and Vannes, all at home. Beating UBB, now second in the table, is the result that stands out, and it shows what this side can do in front of its own crowd.
Away from home they lost 55-25 at Racing 92 and 38-33 at Toulouse, and overall they’ve conceded 237 points in seven games, the second-highest total in the division behind Bayonne.
The Toulouse comeback came largely from the bench. Mathys Lotrian and Tom Ecochard scored as replacements, alongside starters Lorencio Boyer Gallardo, Maxim Granell and Maëlan Rabut. Sevu Reece, Posolo Tuilagi and Peceli Yato were among the other replacements, with Paolo Garbisi starting at fly-half.
Discipline cost Perpignan early at Ernest-Wallon. Diego Mascarenc was sin-binned in the 24th minute and Giorgi Tetrashvili in the 50th, and Toulouse were awarded a penalty try at the moment of the first card. Against a Toulon side that has scored 171 points, that kind of lapse would cost more.
Perpignan have scored 199 points, more than Toulon, Montpellier or Castres. Marco Riccioni started at Toulouse and Pietro Ceccarelli came off the bench, so the props who’ll face Toulon’s scrum have recent minutes behind them.

RC Toulon: five bonus points, the most in the league, and no wins on the road
Toulon have five bonus points from seven games, more than any other club in the Top 14. That total explains how a side with four defeats sits eighth, three points above Perpignan, despite an identical win-loss record.
One of those bonus points came with the win over Pau, and the rest have kept them in touch through a run of defeats. The 28-0 loss at Montpellier came on the road, in the same kind of fixture they face on Saturday, against a home side sitting mid-table.
At Mayol, Toulon beat Racing 92 29-15 and Pau 41-20, and the Pau win was described inside the club as their best performance of the season. They’ve conceded 150 points overall, the second-lowest total in the league behind Montpellier’s 139.
Away from Mayol, the 28-0 defeat at Montpellier was the low point, and the defeats at Bayonne and Castres mean Toulon still haven’t won away from home this season. They’ve scored 171 points in seven games, 28 fewer than Perpignan.
Jaminet’s hat-trick is the headline from last week, with all three tries coming inside half an hour. Jones has now opened his account for the club, and Cowie and Gigashvili crossed in the 45th and 52nd minutes, which put the game beyond Pau before the hour.
Toulon will travel with confidence after the Pau result, but the same side lost by 28 points in Montpellier. Until they win away, I can’t put them ahead of a home team that has taken down UBB.

Our prediction: Perpignan to win
Perpignan are three from three at home and beat the side now second in the table. Toulon are none from three away, and one of those defeats came without scoring a point. That’s six games between the two clubs pointing the same way, and one Toulon home win over Pau doesn’t undo it.
The case against is Toulon’s defence, 150 points conceded, and the fact they’ve just put 41 on Pau. Perpignan also conceded 38 at Toulouse and 55 at Racing. Both of those games were away from home, though, and Perpignan haven’t been beaten in front of their own crowd yet.
A home crowd that has watched three straight league wins favours Perpignan. Toulon’s bonus-point haul points to a close game rather than a rout, so a narrow home win is the likeliest outcome, and the straight Perpignan result is the bet.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
