FC Augsburg vs SC Freiburg: three straight defeats for Freiburg, five league games without a win for Augsburg Bundesliga

Freiburg have lost their last three matches: 2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen, 3-0 at Monaco in the Conference League and 3-1 at home to Bayern Munich on Sunday. They scored twice in that run, and one of those was an own goal by Bayern’s Tom Bischof.

Before that run, Julian Schuster’s side beat Werder Bremen 4-1 and Borussia Monchengladbach 5-0 in their first two home league games, and they’re still third on 13 points after seven matchdays.

Augsburg haven’t won in the league since 6 September, when they won 4-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt. The five games since have brought three draws and two defeats, the latest a 1-1 at home to Union Berlin on Saturday in which Augsburg had 25 shots to Union’s six.

Manuel Baum’s side haven’t lost at the WWK Arena this season, though. They’ve drawn 2-2 with both Bayern and Leverkusen there, and their four home games have produced 13 goals.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 14:30 UK time on 31 October. Freiburg haven’t won any of the last three meetings: a 2-2 draw in Augsburg in January, a 3-1 Augsburg win in Freiburg in August 2025 and a goalless draw in March 2025.

Augsburg went to Sonnenhof Grossaspach on Tuesday with five changes to their side, and Freiburg host Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday, three days before this game.

FC Augsburg: unbeaten at home, but Bah is banned and Brackelmann concussed FC Augsburg

Augsburg have scored in every league game this season and conceded in most of them: 17 goals for and 13 against after seven matches. Both teams have scored in each of their last five games.

Michael Gregoritsch, signed permanently in the summer after a loan spell in the spring, leads the scoring with four league goals. Robin Fellhauer has three, and Rieder, Komur and Massengo have also scored.

In that Union draw, Union’s Uduokhai was sent off on 19 minutes, Massengo put Augsburg ahead on 71, Haberer equalised three minutes later, and Augsburg’s Juma Bah had already been dismissed on 63 minutes to leave both sides with ten men.

Bah, on loan from Manchester City, has been handed a two-match ban and misses this game. Calvin Brackelmann went off after 12 minutes against Union with a blow to the head and is a doubt, while Noahkai Banks, Alexis Claude-Maurice and Steve Mounie are out.

That leaves Gouweleeuw as the likely replacement for Brackelmann in a back three alongside Matsima and Behrens, with Dahmen in goal. Bah had played in midfield against Union, so Fellhauer or Keitel should come in next to Massengo, with Arijon Ibrahimovic, on loan from Bayern, also in the midfield four.

Augsburg’s last away game was a 4-3 defeat at Elversberg on 17 October. They trailed 3-1 at half-time and scored twice in the final 15 minutes through a Gregoritsch penalty and Komur.

SC Freiburg: 12 home goals in four games, four in three away SC Freiburg

Freiburg’s league record splits cleanly by venue. At home they’ve won three of four and scored 12. Away from home they’ve won 1-0 at Paderborn, drawn 2-2 at Frankfurt and lost 2-1 at Leverkusen, four goals scored and four conceded.

The Monaco defeat on 22 October was the worst of the recent run. Freiburg had one shot on target, and Yannik Engelhardt was forced off after 15 minutes and then missed the Bayern game. Florent Muslija remains out with a long-term knee injury.

Yuito Suzuki leads the scorers with four, ahead of Maximilian Eggestein and Igor Matanovic on three each. Matthias Ginter has added three assists from centre-back.

The squad lost Johan Manzambi to Aston Villa in the summer, the club that beat Freiburg 3-0 in last season’s Europa League final. Mio Backhaus, signed from Bremen, has taken over in goal after Noah Atubolu’s departure.

Schuster rotates heavily, keeping only around half of his starting side from one game to the next, and the Wolfsburg tie makes changes likely. Matanovic, who started on the bench against Bayern, is the obvious candidate to replace Holer up front, with Grifo also pushing for a start.

Bayern scored through Upamecano, Gnabry and Olise on Sunday despite missing Neuer, Kimmich, Musiala, Kim and Diaz. Freiburg have now conceded eight goals in three matches.

Probable lineup FC Augsburg: Dahmen; Gouweleeuw, Matsima, Behrens; Wolf, Massengo, Fellhauer, Ibrahimovic; Kade, Rieder; Gregoritsch
Probable lineup SC Freiburg: Backhaus; Lienhart, Ginter, Treu; Makengo, Osterhage; Eggestein, Suzuki, Beste; Scherhant, Matanovic

Free Bundesliga Prediction: FC Augsburg vs SC Freiburg

Our prediction: Over 2.5 goals (1.50)

Augsburg’s seven league games have produced 30 goals and Freiburg’s 25. Over 2.5 goals has landed in four of Augsburg’s last five matches and in all five of Freiburg’s.

Rotation after the cup ties could slow the game down, and Augsburg lose Bah from midfield. That works against defences more than attacks, though: Freiburg have conceded eight in three games and Augsburg have kept one clean sheet all season.

We expect both sides to score and the game to finish 2-2 or 2-1 either way. Over 2.5 goals at 1.50 is the pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your responsibility

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling

We can’t say it enough: gamble responsibly. If you’re struggling to stay in control, don’t wait to seek help.
