Werder Bremen vs Hoffenheim: Fullkrug’s goals against the visitors Bremen can’t beat Bundesliga

Niclas Fullkrug scored twice from the penalty spot at Mainz on Saturday, on seven and 25 minutes, and Werder Bremen won 3-2 for their first away win of the season. The 33-year-old, back at the club on a season-long loan from West Ham, leads the Bundesliga scoring chart.

He scored in four consecutive league games between matchdays two and five, a first in his career. Before Mainz, Bremen came from 0-2 down in three straight league matches, against Augsburg, Dortmund and Paderborn, which had never happened before in the Bundesliga.

Hoffenheim are the visitors at the Weserstadion on Saturday 31 October, kick-off 14:30 UK time. They won both meetings last season, 2-0 in Bremen in January and 1-0 in Sinsheim in May, and they’ve won their last four league visits to Bremen.

Christian Ilzer’s side arrive on three straight wins in all competitions: 2-1 at Borussia Monchengladbach, 3-0 against Lyon in the Europa League and 3-0 against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. The Leverkusen game brought their first league clean sheet of the season.

Both sides have scored in all seven of Bremen’s league games, and all seven of Hoffenheim’s league games have gone over 2.5 goals. Bremen are sixth on 12 points, Hoffenheim tenth on nine.

Bremen played at Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday night. Hoffenheim go to Holstein Kiel on Wednesday after playing on Thursday and Sunday, so Saturday will be their fourth match in ten days.

Werder Bremen: unbeaten at home, but Stage and Alvero are missing from midfield Werder Bremen

Daniel Thioune’s side have taken seven points from three home games: 3-1 against RB Leipzig, 3-2 against Augsburg and 2-2 against Paderborn on 17 October. They’ve scored eight times at the Weserstadion and conceded five.

The Paderborn draw showed what this team does well and what it doesn’t. Bremen were 2-0 down at half-time, and Fullkrug scored on 59 minutes and from the spot on 66 to rescue a point.

In midfield, Jens Stage needs surgery and is out for about a month, Skelly Alvero has a calf problem and Senne Lynen is listed as doubtful with a hip issue. Felix Agu, Keke Topp (meniscus, around seven months), Moussa N’Diaye and Justin Njinmah are also among the absentees.

Ludovit Reis, a free transfer from Hamburg, scored the winner at Mainz on 61 minutes from a midfield pairing with Regeer. Olivier Deman went off at half-time in that game with a knock, and Schmetgens came on at left-back.

Thioune had named the same starting XI for five league games running before the cup tie, with Karl Hein in goal and Fullkrug alone up front in a 4-2-3-1. Cedric Itten and Eren Dinkci, both summer additions, are the main attacking alternatives.

Opponents have scored in every one of Bremen’s seven league games, and they’ve conceded 14 goals, as many as Hoffenheim.

Hoffenheim: four straight league wins in Bremen, but Prass is suspended Hoffenheim

Kramaric’s penalty against Leverkusen on 79 minutes, given after a VAR review, was Hoffenheim’s 1,000th Bundesliga goal. Alexander Prass and Moerstedt added two more in the closing minutes, and the expected-goals count finished 3.19 to 0.62.

Prass misses the trip to the Weserstadion after being sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card after his celebration. He’d scored in consecutive league games, at Gladbach and against Leverkusen. He also scored the long-range opener in January’s 2-0 win in Bremen.

Away from home Hoffenheim have been less convincing. They lost 3-2 at Koln and 3-1 at Paderborn before winning at Gladbach, and they’ve scored five and conceded seven in three away league games.

Patrick Wimmer (thigh), Albian Hajdari (foot) and Nathan De Cat (meniscus) are out. Tim Lemperle, Bambase Conte and Adam Daghim, who went off with cramp against Lyon, are doubts.

Bazoumana Toure, who scored the only goal of May’s 1-0 win over Bremen, joined Newcastle for around EUR 50m, and Grischa Promel moved to Stuttgart. De Cat and Daghim were among the replacements.

Crystal Palace away in the Europa League follows on 5 November. Ilzer will have to manage minutes across the Kiel tie and Saturday with that trip already in view.

Probable lineup Werder Bremen: Hein; Friedl, Pieper, Arthur, Schmetgens; Regeer, Reis; Weiser, Chuki, Grull; Fullkrug
Probable lineup Hoffenheim: Baumann; Coufal, Kabak, Machida, Rots; Daghim, Burger, Avdullahu, Kramaric; Asllani, Hlozek

Our prediction: Hoffenheim to win (2.20)

Hoffenheim have won their last four league visits to Bremen and three games in a row in all competitions. They’ve scored two or more goals in six of their seven league matches, and Bremen haven’t kept a league clean sheet.

Bremen’s case rests on their unbeaten home record and Fullkrug, and we take both seriously. Prass’s suspension costs Hoffenheim their most direct goal threat, and the Kiel trip adds fatigue. Bremen’s midfield without Stage and Alvero is thinner than at any point this season, though, and Hoffenheim scored three times against Leverkusen without Prass’s goal being the decisive one.

We’ll back Hoffenheim at 2.20, and a 2-1 away win fits the way both sides have played this season.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

No commitment from us

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your responsibility

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling

We can’t say it enough: gamble responsibly. If you’re struggling to stay in control, don’t wait to seek help.
